Dead TFT monitors - repair or dump?

I have started to have TFT screens fail with an apparently dead backlight.

 

I have been looking for a repair solution but most are either too expensive or have too many disclaimers about how many components may need replacing.

 

Does anybody here no of a company that offers this type of repair?

 

If not where do I dispose of this sort of kit?

i would keep them for spares, you might get one with a cracked screen or something in the some time in the feature

There could be some health and safety issue with opening LCD monitors and replacing components. Maybe Geoff can elaborate...

Dump... If the screen has gome it will cost more to fix it than to buy a new one...

 

Misco has a 17" for £85... a repair to a 17" is £150...

Sell 'em as a job lot on eBay. Somebody will buy them. That's what we did with 3 that went belly-up two months after the warranty finished :-(

Most tft's that seem to have a back light problem have a couple of capacitors blown on the ac-dc invertor board. These cost about 15p each so for very little time effort and money you can replace these and get the screens working again.

 

This is the same problem you get with athlon motherboards around the 1800mhz mark.

You could do this and turn one or more into digital OHPs

We recycle all our kit. Covers you on the WEEE directive, makes you feel good cause it gets used/sent to a good cause (after they repair), and if you are lucky you can get some money back.

 

I did this with a load of kit earlier this year and was well surprised at the amount we got back.
