MattDLEA Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Just got home from work after redoing the data cabinet, not had much chance to check but was wanting to get an heads up or a bit of advice before i go in tomorrow. took out 3 24 HP switches and replaced them with 2 48 netgear switches. We dont use Vlans or anything clever like that, basically the switches is just to connect all the computers together. Anyways I have connected all the ports up can get onto the internet on the server so that works. Tried logging on with 2 of the ICT computers one couldn't find ranger so shut down the other was taking ages to log on, and didn't complete the log on before the caretaker kicked me out for the day. I was under the impression that I could just take the old switches out and connect the new ones and away we go. The new switches are on the same 10.x.x.x network as the server Any ideas.. probably something simple ( hopefully)
featured_spectre Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Were any of the switches trunked? Have the new switches been given a new IP for routing? Have you done an NS Lookup on the machines to see if they are able to find the server?
MattDLEA Posted October 29, 2013 Author Posted October 29, 2013 The switches are trunked. Not done anything else at all . Just thought these sort themselves out
Michael Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 I wonder if it's a speed issue? Your old switches may have been 10/100 and the Netgear's are 1000. A quick fix is to temporarily reduce all ports to Auto 100 or similar and see if the problems go away. Another thing to check is to logon locally to a workstation and run ipconfig /all Does it all look correct?
MattDLEA Posted October 29, 2013 Author Posted October 29, 2013 Cheers will look at them when I get in tomorrow
twin--turbo Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 without knowing the topology of the network, and without seeing the previous switch config, there are a number of possibilities. Rob
MattDLEA Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 just to update before i do anything else. Tunes on 20 Computers in the ICT suite 16 log on no problem 4 fail
chazzy2501 Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 as @Michael said is it a gigabit issue. I upgraded and a few of my Ethernet sockets had faults on a single pair which intern caused the PCs to fail at a gigabit speeds. (gigabit using all 4 pairs as 10/100 uses only 2) Also you may want to tell the switch that you have clients on the other end of the ports (Edge port mode) and enable RSTP on them as well (Unless they are Macs).
MattDLEA Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 OK STP is disabled STP Operation Mode was MSTP I have swapped to RSTP I have changed the speed for that port to 100 Now i get no log one servers are available? On the others that werent working I have removed Ranger so its just a normal window7 machine but now the network port lights on the base unit are not lit?
MattDLEA Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 forgot to add couldn't find e edge port mode?
catch21 Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) Welcome to the strange world of layer 2 in 2013. I don't know how many times I thought "well it should work" and then for no real reason, it starts working, you don't know why it didn't work and you don't know why it started working. Mysterious. Just makes me more grateful when it's all working. A hardware engineer sitting at a bench once said to me, back in 1978 while breathing in too much soldering iron smoke, "it's strange, you make an oscillator circuit which doesn't oscillate, and you make an amplifier circuit which does".
