MacBook Pro Orange/Yellow screen of death (2010)

Hi

It appears the EduGeek MacBook Pro used for publishing our iOS has died. It had a browser window open idle when it suddenly rebooted, the normal grey apple logo was shown but instead of the login screen appearing the display just showed a yellow/orange screen.

The MacBook Pro is a summer 2010 model and came with onboard and nvidia graphics cards but it appears one/both have burned out.

I have tried resetting PRAM and SMC (thanks @GrumbleDook) but sadly nothing has worked so far.

It is a case of replacing the logic board (aka everything worth anything inside basically...) or is there anything else I can try?

Has it desoldered itself like the xbox 360 cpu and PS3 GPU BGA packages used to, you may be able to try the same tricks. You could also look at trying to jump into the EFI if the Apple logo is still showing and see if that can shed any light. Also have you tried booting from other media, it could just be that the os has cooked itself and is giving the equivalent of a BSOD blink, if so you are lucky, I wasted almost an hour trying to boot a mac off a USB key that worked once then randomly failed before I figured out the thing was simply bombing without an error because the flash drive was dodgey.

Windows bootcamp doesnt run either. Tried a 2nd display but no success so I think the logic board could be toast.

I think this can usually be fixed by a reflow. Certainly cheaper than a new board but with no promise of success!

With regards to replacement parts, ebay or one of the sellers on here like @ICTDirect_Dave, @VeryPC or one of the others ie @Millgate / @CPLTD ? etc

If so great, if not then you would have had to of purchased a new or replacement ( mother / system / logic ) board

 

It now has a lovely edugeek hue / colour on the screen !!

I'd give the baking a go ZH I've had good results with it on Laptop mainboards just don't let Mrs ZH see you using the best over tray or you maybe toast

Hehe, I am now thinking its time to replace the beast anyway. It was so slow... really slow.... so time to order a new one.

Once I get the replacement I will strip out the board and try it if I can find a screwdriver to open it up although I dont know if it will work as I think this is gpu part related.

Maybe send the old MBP to me ? I have the tools etc and would be willing to give it a go ....

What else do you do with old tatty apples but bin them or bake them, maybe make a pie

 

 

 

The reflow is what I was talking about with the Xbox etc. Apple never really sorted their need for form over function with a lot of the earlier mac books and despite their attempted image of being 'cool' ran like blast furnaces as the fans did not run enough and were not grunty enough to keep everything cool enough to last and not burn your lap.

 

 

 

The new Intel chips are way better and so a new one is almost certainly worth it and they now fit much better into the provided thermal envelope of the chassis.

Reflow/Logic board solder, I temp fixed my MacBook (one before the unibody) by using a heat gun and giving it a blast in certain areas! If not speak to MCC for repairs, or new logic board off eBya/The Book Yard!

Right I am going to try the xbox towel trick in the next day or so which basically involves wrapping it in a towel and leaving it on for 10 - 20 mins or so (checking no major heat issues while doing it) then leaving it off for a few hours. It did bring my RROD 360 back to life long enough to wait for the collection details to come through.

I IN NO WAY ENDORSE THIS METHOD AND STRONGLY ADVISE NO ONE ATTEMPTS IT. IF YOU DO IT ITS NOT MY FAULT IF EVERYTHING BURNS DOWN!!!!!
