We are looking to move to another provider soon however some of them don't include a smarthost/mx server option, what would I have to be sure of when deciding whether or not to do this?

running your own mail server via DNS direct delivery (assuming you already run your own mail server via a smarthost delivery) is a piece of cake...

HOWEVER...

You need to ensure you can administer your own DNS to set MX records, your firewall is locked down tight, your mail server is patched up to date all the time and that you have purchased the appropriate mail server protection...

we use ESET, which is around £4k a year for our 2500 mailboxes...

also check if they do virus scanning on your mails coming in if you send your SMTP mail via the ISP first and then onto you.

Personally I'd recommend using Office 365 or google instead.
