Hi All

 

I'm currently looking at our backup processes and at the moment we are using a combination of cloud based backups (Redstor) and D2D2T via Backup Exec 12.5 and its agents. I'm not a huge fan of BE and I've heard a lot of good stuff about VEEAM on here, and given that most of our server environment is virtualised would seem like the ideal product so....

 

1. What sort of costs are we looking at

2. Any limitations I should be aware of

3. Can I use my existing tape hardware with it (Overland Neo 2000)

 

Answers to any of the above would be gratefully received!

Its a no-brainer to go with Veeam if you are virtualized.

 

It completely outclasses BackupExec in every way and is incredibly simple to use.

 

1) About 2k I think for 16 virtual machines here. They are running a 15% discount at the moment. They also do a nice Essentials pack that makes it even cheaper. They can give you all the prices with a simple phone call.

2) Not really, it even does individual file restores these days.

3) Tape? haha no idea, not used them for 10 years We just backup to the backup servers disk and mirror that to another location in the school.

veeam like vranger is priced per socket so how many sockets are used in your VM host environment.

 

about £300 a socket?

One thing to bear in mind that Veeam can only backup Virtual Machines and not physical servers. So you will have to use BackupExec or be creative with Windows backup for any physicals.

Version 7 supports tape, probably worth downloading the eval and give it a try,

I've used VEEAM for about two years now and can only echo the above. It's fantastic, and Symantec have really dropped the ball with BE in comparison.

 

A limitation of the latest one is it is x64 only (so we have had to replace our aging x86 backup server, which was no bad thing).

 

I've only read the manual on v7, but the tape support looked a bit sparse compared with BE 2010 (for example, I didn't see anything about inventorying or creating scratch media). I'll know more when I've installed and got v7 running.

Agreed, I was glad when Veeam v7 came along and we could drop BE altogether, Veeam is a real dream but can be expensive for the Enterprise versions.

 

Inventory is done by simply right clicking on the Auto Loader within the Backup Infrastructure section, the Veeam Scratch is simply is a Media pool called Free.

 

One thing you will have to do if you are running BE on the same server is to stop all the BE services otherwise the tape device or Tape button will not appear within the Veeam GUI.

As others have said really good to use and I find it much better to restore from the BE.

Have used BE, Acronis and Veeam oin the recent past and Veeam outclasses them both. In my opinion, BE is horrific compared to the simplicity of Veeam.

So i've just used the Veeam individual file restore for the first time.

 

What an incredible bit of software, the restore took literally 45 seconds to do.

We used Backup Exec only for our physicals and because VEEAM didn't output to tape, but it got kicked into touch when I upgraded our Backup Server to Storage Server 2012 and found BE media server couldn't be installed onto it.

 

I now just use USB connected hard drives and Windows backup on our few remaining physicals and VEEAM for everything else.

 

Not sure Symantec can recover from this to be honest.
