CAM Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I'm collecting at the moment and got sucked into a gaming club at East Grinstead. Had a few games with Orks and painting up a Dark Eldar Wych Cult which is about 1000pts. Will get stomped with Overwatch and fragile Raiders getting trashed but they look cool and no-one at the club has seen them. Theme is more important then effectiveness IMO!
glen_j Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Not a player but have a Chaos space marines army that i bought nearly 10 years ago, still need to finish painting them
localzuk Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Used to! Hoping to start up again soon in fact. Had a Space Marines army, Chaos Army (my pride and joy) and an Ork army when I was a teen. Sold the lot for about a grand to help fund uni though!
CAM Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 I can give you painting tips if you like, might blog it. No longer need to thin paint for a typical looking army, undercoat followed by basecoat then ink gives quick and effective results.
glen_j Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 yeah the more tips on painting the better might dig them out tonight and see what state i left them in
localzuk Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Tip for painting... WASH WASH AND WASH SOME MORE!!!
Rawns Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I had a chaos army too. Loved them! Think they are still in the roof space too. Was a sad tale though, only a handful of people I knew collected them yet none of them actually played!
CAM Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 Tip for painting... WASH WASH AND WASH SOME MORE!!! Agrax Earthshade. King of all washes for that subtle brown shade to bring out the recesses.
sonofsanta Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Not any more, prices were bad when I were a young 'un (12-15 years ago when I played) but they're downright obscene these days. I still have all my models lying around though, they're in too much of a state to really sell. Got a mostly painted Alaitoc Eldar army at home (can of white spray paint for the undercoat, blue, black and yellow wash as appropriate then some paint for the details - squad of twenty painted in an afternoon ) but Chaos Space Marines are still clearly the best. I also have a lot of Dark Elves, Dwarves, some bits of Orc & Gobbo, a Necromunda Delaque squad, lots of GorkaMorka and a Skaven Mordheim gang. I preferred the skirmish games in the end, less effort to set up and didn't lose their momentum half so much as the bigger games tended to - plus I liked the sense of progression in watching a Juve earn his stripes, take a wound to the leg, and develop a whole little backstory through a series of (un)lucky dice rolls.
Garacesh Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 'nids and Dark Eldar, but I had to sell my Dark Eldar during money troubles Preferred them to my Tyranids, much more fun and tactical, but this was right after the re-release so they were more sought after. Don't actively play so much now, though..
CAM Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 I took my Dark Eldar to East Grinstead for their first game on Sunday. They turned heads, opened the case and had players coming up going "Wow, Dark Eldar. Never played against those. What's that model? This the new or old Raider?" Played against Eldar and ended with my Wyches failing to charge twice in a row before they finally got in combat and wiped a squad each in a turn. Lelith alone threw out 12 attacks on her own (WS9 versus WS3 with a bonus attack for each point of difference!). And a game turning Fire Prism kept bouncing off my Dark Lance and Blaster shots. I lost but it was fun!
Garacesh Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 Lelith Hesperax is just.. just brutal. Shove her with a squad of Bloodbrides and you've got some awesome close-combat fun times. Kabalite Warriors with Splinter Rifles are good (put in a Splinter Cannon, too for Assault4/Heavy6 goodness).. Scourges are great hit-and-run units and don't get me started on how filthy the Homunculi can be if spec'd right. I miss my Dark Eldar. Wish I'd have sold my 'nids instead
Novalee Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 We have a club in school with a number of students - I pop along sometimes but haven't got my own set or anything - would be interested though, it is just finding the time between work and uni.
CAM Posted October 15, 2013 Author Posted October 15, 2013 I might be dropping Lelith to squeeze another squad of Wyches in. She was good but for 1000pts I only have a few Raiders on the board to soak up first turn shooting volleys. Tempted to add a Ravager with Disintegrator Cannons too for some AP2 anti-infantry fire.
Ghostgame Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Have just started collecting the Tau. Nearly finished my 600pt army to a level where I can get playing. Going to start aiming for 1000pts soon.
Garacesh Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 I might be dropping Lelith to squeeze another squad of Wyches in. She was good but for 1000pts I only have a few Raiders on the board to soak up first turn shooting volleys. Tempted to add a Ravager with Disintegrator Cannons too for some AP2 anti-infantry fire. I found Raider's to be pretty pointless in 1,000 pts. Ravagers are good to have in case of greeblies or tanks, but if it's a big greebly, Wyches/Bloodbrides can usually take it out (My friend used to absolutely hate me for demolishing his Trygon Prime with a 10-strong unit of Bloodbrides and Wyches) Makes me want to finish painting my 'nids and sell them off to get some Dark Eldar back.. Curse you!
CAM Posted October 15, 2013 Author Posted October 15, 2013 How do you get across the board though without Raiders? I am running Wych Cult though so my heavy firepower is somewhat limited!
Garacesh Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Stay in cover. Run. If something tries to shoot them, shoot them back with Kabalite Warriors. Use Kabalite Warriors as meatshields. There are many options
Garacesh Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Finished? Finished?! Your base isn't repainted black ;D
CAM Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 Yeah I noticed that after posting it on my blog. Fixed now.
bushby Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Necrons here got a mate who works for GW and tells me about all the new stuff. and Nec's are where it is at for the moment with updates coming. i just wished that i didnt paint the heads on their own and leave them in front of tv to dry as i have lost half of them -_- so im going to have a bunch of headless i also have SM's which i like just for how simple they are to paint and some orks that still sat in a box
Garacesh Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 To be fair, I wouldn't put it past Necrons to be able to work without heads. Just put an 'upgraded unit' in there with a head, fancy-smanshy some antenna on there and say he's wirelessly transmitting sight/targeting/etc data to the rest of his squad
bushby Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 to be fair i do have some deathmark heads still so they will be used to make my warriors have heads for the ones that are missing but the only thing i dont like about nec's are how fiddley they are to glue together each time they came out of my to paint box i have a base with legs on and body grasping for its life on a comrads leg
ICTDirect_Dave Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I haven't played in years. I took my mighty Space Wolves to the top twenty in three Grand Tournaments ten years ago but stopped playing much after that. Have Space Wolves, Iron Warriors & Imperial Guard armies in the attic somewhere. I'll have to dig them out sometime!
