Power management schedule restarts and WOL

I'm looking into the possibility of changing the power plan to try and stop disruption caused by updates and software deployment by scheduling restarts, ideally in the evening for student workstation plus netbooks if it can be done and weekends for admin and teaching staff as well as WOL for workstations that are turned off by the students.

 

I was thinking of using GPO schedule tasks to do this, anybody doing something similar ?

We have WSUS in place and have a GPO so that while the PCs are logged on, no automatic restart will take place. You can schedule it so that while the PCs are idle and not logged on updates can be installed and a restart can be performed if necessary.

I would suggest you look at the Data Synergy PowerMAN and WakeMyPC tools. You probably only need one of them – PowerMAN is more comprehensive, it can be used to schedule sleep/shutdown and wake-up. It offers a lot more policy options than the built-in GPO power management and a nifty reporting feature so you may be able to save some cash too. You can even sleep-wake-shutdown or wake-reboot-sleep if you like (in almost any order or schedule). Alternatively, if you just want to do wake-up you could try their WakeMyPC. They have a free version of basic jobs or a paid-for tool if you want all the bells and whistles.

Thaks i will take a look, i might also be able to try something with out filtering system lightspeed so will report back if its anygood.

I use WSUS and the associated GPO. All updates are download automatically but install date it set to Mondays at 6.

I then WOL everything just before that and done.

 

Powerplan is GPP but I'm looking at PowerMAN if I every get chance.

Been told i more or less have to do this free by the boss, so i have to try creating a script maybe and see if i can deploy that in SCCM or GPO on a few test machines and see if it works. Got about 600 workstations and 500 laptop/netbooks that later of which this probably wont work. Edited October 9, 2013 by iamjezz
