Touchscreen question

Hi Everyone,

 

I have a question regarding interactive touch screens, we have just purchased 5 Genee 65" touch screens and put the first one up yesterday,

everything is fine although the sound quality could be a little better, but the teacher says when he writes on the screen its not smooth curves

it comes out a bit jaggedy (if that's a word).

 

Is this a Genee problem or are all touch screen like this due to the IR ?? is there a way to improve it at all ??

 

I have tried adjusting the configuration but the teacher says it didn't make much difference, if I remember right he

had problems with his previous white board as well.

A good quality touchscreen shouldn't be like that - ours don't It would be worth checking resolution of the laptop / computer matches that of the native res of the screen.

Thanks for that I will have a look on Monday, they must be descent the unit were around £3k each if the resolution is matching then would that make a big difference ??? Its connected via HDMI so wouldn't it just take the resolution of the laptop ??? Edited September 27, 2013 by Marc_Lemar

It could make a difference. I imagine they are 1920 x 1080 if they're 65" ?

 

If it's mirroring the laptop it's unlikely to be that res anyway. Might not make a big difference but it's worth just testing by using the touchscreen as a 2nd screen at its full res.

Just had a read of the manual and there is no mention of changing the resolution.

A quick look online and it shows the native res as 1920 x 1080. I'd be interested to see if that helps.

 

After that it's I'm thinkers it's down to the 'sensitivity' - can't remember the term I'm looking for - dot pitch?

Just seen the resolution myself but not sure the laptop will handle it, looking at mine it goes nowhere near but I suppose when the touch screen is attached I can set the resolution as per that screen.

Most fairly recent chipsets should be able to output that res - at least for testing purposes. It will be an extended display and not mirror of course.

Thanks for your help XiJ I will give it a try come Monday morning, if by default it takes on the laptops resolution that could well be the fault as I know I never changed it.

Having worked with touchscreens for a fair while now, all of the above suggestions have some merit. Definitely check out the resolution, for dual screen operation most laptops will happily work at 1366 x 768. To get full HD then almost certainly you will have to output only to the screen, which most teachers don't like. Some Windows software on Win 7 or 8 can offer very smooth writing, search for Windows Journal, the screen if its any good, it should write very well. The software you are using could be poor, even Activinspire doesn't write too well, Smart Notebook does better. The Genee is at the budget end of touchscreen solutions so it uses cheaper touch components, therefore it's touch response isn't as good as some others, nevertheless is much better than a projector/whiteboard option.

Just plugged my laptop into the TV and the both connect at 1366 x 768 the only way I can get It to connect at 1920 x 1080 is to extend the desktop or have a single display (they won’t like that at all), does anybody know if there is a utility that can show both screens but in 2 different resolutions ???

OK slightly confused the laptop says 1366x768 but the tv says 1920x1080 so is the tv in full hd or not ???

Am I right in thinking then if the screens resolution is 1920x1080 then that's a fixed native resolution (i.e. the screen will display other resolutions but not to its best), but to actually achieve this the laptop also needs to be configured so that the output of the laptop matches the resolution of the screen ??

The TV screen will most like be doing a form of upscaling for it to output at 1080p, even if the input is much lower. You will need both to be the same resolution to have the best experience I would expect.

 

My advice would be to force the laptop into displaying at 1080p, even if the laptops screen wont display it, then see if the writing improves. If so then you can set the laptop back to its native using the TV. Then see about getting the laptop to output in 1080p, though I expect having the screen and the output different while mirroring is verging on the impossible.

Just a quick one, has anybody experienced condensation on the inside of the touchscreen ??? we had one today after a full day of use that looks like it has 2 condensation marks one either side of the screen. I told the boss and he says its probably because its been stored in a bonded warehouse for a while and is now being used but I'm not so sure myself.

If the screen has an additional front glass screen it's possible moisture has got in. It's a horrible design IMO anyway as it makes for a less accurate touch. I've never heard anyone say they've had condensation before. Urgh

 

We did have an old Samsung panel that had marks on the inside - we suspect from the original manufacture.

It might not be condensation but that's what it looks like, will be interested to see if its there in the morning.

Might just be a one off if they've been stored in a very cold warehouse for a while.

 

In my early tech support days I had some CRT iMacs like that. I blew one up!

I have seen condensation on screens on more than one occasion, it seems to be related to weather! In my experience it dissipates naturally, but might take a couple of days. Never know it to blow a screen up (yet!)

We have had 7 Genee Touch screens now for going on 6 months and they are great, the teachers love them. Being the tech guy I’m usually the first point of call if anything goes wrong and apart from providing some support plugging various laptops in to the touch screens they been very reliable and I have not experienced any problems.

 

I did notice that when the engineers were installing the screens they did change some settings in special config section of configuration. Altering the IR parameters so the smooth is set to the highest and un-checking open touch should eliminate your problems.

 

My experience with any IR touch screens has also taught me that fluorescent light bulbs can affect the screen touch performance if they are to close, so if this is the case you may want to move your touch screen.

 

I myself have found the Genee Touch to be a very strong screen with a very high quality resolution, making them ideal for our younger learners who often use Lego bricks and various other items on the screen. The screen itself is either a sharp or Samsung panel so I know the components will be of excellent quality. I would recommend to any school in the market to have a look.

Jittery Touch

For smoother writing on the screens, the smoothness setting can be altered. To find this setting please go to the configuration menu, which is included in the G Touch driver menu on your computer. Please select the special config tab and uncheck open MultiTouch, followed by setting the IR smooth setting to the highest.

 

Condensation

This is down to the G Touch being shipped in cold conditions and once in use it will disappear in 3 to 4 days.
