burnsyb0y Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 At the moment at home and work i am running windows 7 pro but i have lots of people at work commenting on they're home PC/Laptop with windows 8 some good some bad. And i was wondering if anyone has tried 8.1 yet and if they could tell me if they think its work upgrading (just for home). All i use my PC for is browsing and casual gaming... Mostly Battlefield 3. In case anyone knows of any problems with hardware so far, my home specs are: I5 3570k @stock speed 8Gb corsair vengeance 1600Mhz HD7850 2GB MSI TwinFrozr III @1010Mhz P8Z77V-LX Motherboard (wont list anything else as its all standard stuff) Thanks guys and gals.

I will be rebulding my w8 machine to 8.1 soon so I will let you know. In general though I found windows 8 to be pretty good for games, I have had no major issues with it and it boots a bit quicker too. One other nice thing is it appears a lot of the time you dont need to reboot (FINALLY) when upgrading graphics card drivers. If you're into IT I would go to Windows 8.1 just so you can get up to speed yourself with it, it doesnt really have any negatives and some games gain a few fps (not much though)
DMcCoy Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 There are some dcom permission issues that show up when using the weather app, I've not bothered to work out how to fix it yet, just went back to 8. Also "This PC" is such a stupid name, and it's impossible to have a Computer icon on the start menu that isn't called "This PC" even if it's renamed.

bushby Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 im using 8.1 on my surface RT there is very little difference between the versions. but on the management side there is a difference as 2012.1 or what ever its called introduces polices for RT aswell

Is there any point in upgrading then? Especially since the 8.1 upgrade path doesn't transfer your programs, only your data. I think I'm going to stick with 7 until 8 dies a hideous, squealing death like Vista did.

As much as everybody hated Win8 when it first reared it's ugly head (i.e. the Metro interface) I'm hearing some very positive feedback about it from people. Especially for laptops. One of my techie friends from down Bristol way actually has Win8 on his gaming laptop (for added irony, it's a mac) and says it's brilliant. It's much less bulky than Win7 x64 so runs a lot smoother. And he's found no compatibility issues. I still don't think there's any place for it in the desktop world, but I'm starting to worry it won't crash and burn like we'd hoped.

In part I think it depends whether or not touchscreens become ubiquitous.
Garacesh Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 They won't, I'll put good money on that. Not for desktops. I think we'll see the return of laptops with touch or pen screens, like the old notebooks did. But it really won't ever get accepted into the desktop world because screens usually need to be upright, And holding your arms outstretched and unsupported for a period of time ends up getting pretty strenuous. So unless we convert to top-down computing where our desk is our screen (which would make playing RTS games awesome! then I don't think W8 will ever take off too much in the realm of the full-fat PC.

browolf Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 I find I quite like win8 after being forced to use it on my gf's new pc. However I haven't tried to do anything more run/install apps. It might be a different story trying to troubleshoot problems. Metro's ok if you delete the tiles you dont need and put on the ones you do use. When we went to pc world in the summer, we noticed a lot of the new laptops had touchscreens. Obviously to make best use of metro.
