I don't know if this should be here or in Server 2008 because I don't know what is causing it!

Since just before the summer holiday, our DH is now unable to download anything from anywhere - off an email or a website - be it a pdf, text doc, spreadsheet, whatever.

The message she gets is "your security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded"

It doesn't matter what computer she is on. I have deleted her profile (and taken it off her laptop, too, as it happens when she is offsite) but this made no difference. Nothing has been altered that I know of.

Can anyone help? I don't know what else to look at :(

Computer got IE10 on it now instead of IE9? Sounds like the machines Internet Explorer settings are borked. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced and hit the shiny Reset button and then the same place but Security tab and ensure all 4 zones are set to default and see if they help?

Thanks @john but it happens on any machine she is on, not just hers, and other people are fine on the selfsame machines :(

Sounds like either some GPO or Profile is still hitting this user that is creating the issue you are having.

Not meaning to sounds like teaching you to suck eggs here but when you reset her profile how did you do that? Did you go to the server and rename the entire folder that her roaming profile made and then restarted her PC and that should give her a new one?

Yep. Deleted the whole thing off the server and her laptop and restarted the laptop

Very strange then if she has no profile and the issue follows her its either something broken in the default profile or on the machine she is using first time that is creating the profile or you have a Group Policy that is upsetting the apple cart.

If it was a GP then surely it would affect others? Haven't found anyone else yet!

After I deleted her profile I logged on to my own machine because she hadn't ever used it just to avoid anything from her own computer.

I am going to recreate her - copying all data etc - to see if that sorts it. I wanted to avoid that but I dont think I can :(

Sounds like a corrupt reg key that is creating the issue you are having.

We encountered a similar issue and found out it we needed to delete the IE10 Reg key located at the following location

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

Deleting this allowed the user to download

Thanks. but given that I deleted her profile and she had the same issue on every machine, how or what was setting this reg key on every machine she logged on to?

Thats the whole registry key / branch and GPO / GPP normally ... I presume your gpo or gpp's are correct. Might just need to be double checked

That or a script that silently changes or applies registry changes

But that doesn't explain why it only affects one user!

This is SO frustrating! :(

When you say other people are fine on the machine she suffers on are they using existing roaming profiles or a new one? Maybe worth trying a new one you can just rename someones roaming profile directory and test and then delete and rename the old one back and they go back to how they were.

If another "new" user doesn't have this issue then it must be something that is applying to that user that is doing it anything upstream like a proxy server that authenticates users?

You can get this to happen when a user with a roaming profile logs into an IE10 machine and then logs into an IE9 machine afterward.

It affects HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

if the user has a roaming profile, you may want to delete the server copy or edit the ntuser.dat hive with Regedit just to make sure that the local and server copies are both the same.

That is useful, thanks

Our machines dont have IE10 but maybe it got downloaded onto her laptop. But if that was the case it would be OK on her laptop and not anywhere else - unless IE10 has got on to one of the ITSuite machines I suppose.

If it affected a registry key, is that somehow attached to the user only? Because immediately after she told me about the issue, I logged on to her machine as two other members of staff, and me, and a class, and it didnt do it?

I deleted the server and local copy of her profile, not once, but twice and it still did it.
