*CRYING* Help with a BroadBand Router and our Network

Hi everyone,

 

This is probably an easy one, but I'm not hitting the right buttons.

 

As the regulars on here know I'm fed up of being blocked from using various websites (including here) by the powers that be at our County Council. Now I'm having problems downloading HP drivers for printers of all things. I've had a broadband connection installed into the server room and purchased a Belkin Wireless ADSL Modem / Router.

 

It's sitting on the network fine, I can wirelessly access it and also via hardwire as well.

 

The problem is that I can't get the Belkin to be my primary access point for the Internet. It point black refuses to let me through. I know the connection and the Belkin work on as a seperate IP Group, but I want it on the school network so that I'l be able to dial in from home eventually and give me full access to the internet.

 

The school network is on ??.??.2.1 and the Belkin is sitting at ??.??.2.11 . I've turned it off as a DHCP Server.

 

What am I doing wrong? I want to make the Belkin my access to the Web, and not the Proxy Router County thing.

 

Any ideas please?

Have you set your default gateway to the new router?

If that means the same as ChrisH then yep.

My laptop is hardwired and also has an inbuilt wireless card as well.

I have no idea now.

 

The Belkin Router is on 10.98.2.11, the wired NIC is 10.98.2.121 and the wireless NIC is 10.98.2.226. The subnet mask is 255.255.254.0, but I still can't get connected though the Belkin Router. The main router/proxy works fine though.

Still sounds like your default gateway is wrong. Unless your doing vlan stuff?

You havent still got your old proxy settings in or anything like that have you?

I'm running IE with the proxy settings in IE-> Tools-> Internet Options-> Connections-> LAN Settings-> Then 10.98.2.5 in the Proxy Settings and 1080 as the port, and Bypass Proxy Server for Local Addresses. This is the school Intenet Access settings.

 

In Firefox I'm asking it to Direct Connect to the Internet. I've now also tried to auto detect settings.

 

I've also fixed the two cards to the IP Addresses stated earlier, with subnets of 255.255.254.0 and the gateway as 10.98.2.11 (Belkin router address).

 

What am I missing?

DNS is broken. What DNS server(s) are you attempting to use?

Ping and nslookup are your friends

 

Disable your wireless connection.

 

Firstly ping the localhost of your laptop (ping 127.0.0.1)

The ping the assigned address (ping 10.98.2.121)

Then ping the lan port of the belkin router (ping 10.98.2.11)

Then ping the WAN port of your belkin router (I don't know this ...)

 

Once you know that these work then you can start checking your DNS.

Firstly ping the DNS servers of the ISP for your ADLS line (rather than internal), then make sure at least one of those is your primary DNS on the laptop.

nslookup

Then trace the connection to the DNS server

tracert

 

The aboce can help you tracking down which chunk has the break in communication.

Should the gateway be set on the wireless card and not the ethernet card? You can't talk to the belkin though ethernet now can you

 

Try removing the gateway for the ethernet and making the gateway for the wireless the router.

OK, its working. Thats another lesson learned for me. Big thanks to Geoff and ChrisH for their patience and also to DMcCoy and GrumbleDook. I've learned something new today. The team always comes through in the end.

 

I'm going to edit some of my previous posts to remove any addresses etc.

 

I put the DNS Server the same IP as my Belkin and it works :oops: . DOH!!

Sounds like your AD DNS servers don't have forwarders setup btw.

Agree with Geoff,

 

You need to enter your ISP's DNS servers in forwarders section. This will solve your problems of entering your ISP dns servers in your clients.

Tell me more guys, how do I go about this. County Council set all this up for us just over a year ago now. Would that explain why I can't get the Microsoft Update to run on the servers (it wont validate as a genuine copy)?

Thats a dodgey key beaver that. Basically all worstations should point to 2 of your DNS servers. These dns servers should then have your county DNS server as a forwarder.

And don't forget, in the TCP/IP settings of your DCs / DNS servers ... the DNS should point to your internal DNS servers ... not the county or ISP servers. You should only point to them in the settings of your forwarders.

 

The process is something like this.

 

Workstation/server ---> Internal DNS Server ---> (via info from forwarder) External DNS Server (ISP or County)

 

If you miss out the internal bit, that is when you can get problems.

I was suspicious about that. I'm on the phone to them later then, if they answer. If it was me and the dodgy key, fair enough, but it was a County Council Techie and his crew doing the installs for everything.

 

@GrumbleDook OK mate, I'm looking into that as well later. This is all new to me. lol. Some Network Manager eh! Thats what you get for working on a 'if it aint broken dont fix it' policy. Obviously it is broken though.
