Editing IE10 GPP on Windows 7

I've created some IE10 group policy preferences on a Windows 8 laptop, but I also need to manage those from a Windows 7 desktop (also with IE10 installed)

 

However, when I edit the policy and click on the Internet Settings in Preferences I get an odd error:

 

" An invalid or out of place element was detected and will be ignored.

 

"

 

I would have though that the only requirement was that IE10 was installed on the Windows7 machine that I'm trying to edit the policy on?

You can only edit IE10 policies from a Windows 8 generation OS (So Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012).

 

However, you could hack an earlier GPP using the method described here: Managing IE10 (on Win7) GPOs from Windows Server 2008 R2 - Spiceworks

But I can manage IE10 policy settings on the W7 machine fine - just not the preferences. I did look at that spiceworks thread which gives you the hack to edit the xml, but my xml already has a max set to 99.0.0.0, which must be the default for 8 as I have never modified it directly.

I've googled this error and cannot find any definition of it at all! It must be something specific to the Win7 machine I'm trying to do this on.

Nope, I get the same error if I try to edit the IE10 GPP on W7 or 2008R2. It doesn't work. You either have to use the XML hack (which I can verify works fine) or a newer OS. It's mad, but the standard GPP is not editable on W7, even with IE10 installed.

As I created the original GPP's on a Windows 8 machine I guess the xml hack won't work (i.e its already set to 99.0.0.0!)

Yup, I believe you'll have to make a new IE8 one and edit the XML on that - the IE10 one isn't backwards compatible, where the IE8 one isn't forwards compatible. No idea if there's a hack to make the IE10 one work the other way, but I'd just say ditch it and recreate.

We stuck in a 2012 server to manage it through there, we guessed this wouldn't be the last policy to be changed and most will prob end up going this way.

I've 'reserved' the Windows 8 laptop for me to use until further notice! I guess our next server installs will be 2012 and that will give me another option.
