RockinAway2K Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Hello, I have a pretty good understanding of exchange, but this is stumping me. When I terminate a user, I back up their e-mail, disable and delete their AD account and create a distribution list to forward mail to the manager, etc. Well, it turns out internal e-mails are not forwarding, only external. An internal client who e-mails this terminated employee gets a bounce-back error - proclaiming the mailbox does not exist. When someone external e-mails this terminated user, it forwards to the recipients just fine. I added the smtp e-mail to the e-mail addresses tab - as I have always done. What's extra strange is that this happens most the time, but in some cases internal and external forwarding work just as it should for random users... configurations are identical. Any ideas? Thanks in advanced.
collegesysadmin Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 It sounds like it is a mail client caching issue. I would flush the address cache on the client.
FishCustard Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Silly thing to check, but still: try sending an internal email but entering the full address, i.e. '[email protected]' as opposed to using Outlook's auto-suggest. Also, is mail tracking enabled on your server? If not, enable it (and perhaps Mail Transport verbose logging) and go spelunking in the logs.
RockinAway2K Posted August 19, 2013 Author Posted August 19, 2013 Thanks for the tip, Fish. Yeah, I made sure not to use the cached auto-suggest address. Tracking is enabled, but a little baffled about what to look for exactly. Our server has been behaving oddly as of late... Client Outlook behavior is very quirky. Dates are not syncing with other team members. Appointments are moving across days when the meeting has not been changed by hosts. Starting to think there is a larger problem here, but I'm too inexperienced to really figure it out for myself.
