dibekem Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Hi guys. Im having some problem with an old XP home edition machine. Basically I can't get online. The LAN connection is okay. I even get windows updates and updates for malawarebytes but when I go online it's just says Internet explorer cannot display the page. I had Sp3 installed so I removed that but made no difference. Any ideas? Thanks
VeryPC_Tom_M Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Can you access https traffic? (Try https://www.google.co.uk/) Which browser are you using?
teddybear Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Have you tried a different browser? Had issues a few weeks ago on Win7 machines with an IE Update that broke it.
strawberry Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 have you checked the proxy settings? does another browser work?
dibekem Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 Yes. The pc has chrome and opera installed but none working. Ive checked the proxy. Ive reset the user settings too in internet options.
Darth Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Have you tried pinging a web site? Also, have you got another device on the same router and does that work?
Michael Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Reset the Windows Firewall to defaults and disable any third party firewalls (if applicable).
dibekem Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 I have loads of device as I'm in a school. Also I have just pinged googles website successfully.
dibekem Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 I've disabled the windows firewall already but made no diff. I have sophos installed. Could it be that?
Michael Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Try rebooting into Safe Mode with Networking. If this works (which I suspect it will), you just need to work out what program(s) are creating the problem. If it doesn't work in Safe Mode with Networking, then I would re-image the workstation if possible.
JoeBloggs Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Do you have any software installed such as Cisco AnyConnect? Something like this could block but would say it is blocked for a reason
dibekem Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 Im trying to reboot the pc in safe mode but doest give me that option. I pressed F8 before startup but that gives me the boot selection only. F2 for Bios and F3 was something else. How do you boot xp in safe mode?
VeryPC_Tom_M Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 It sounds like you're hitting F8 too early, and ending up with a BIOS selection notification. I'd turn the PC on, give it a slow 10 count, then start pressing F8. You're looking for the Windows Advanced Options menu.
dibekem Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 I have just fixed it!yay! All i did was uninstalled Sophos! Thank you guys for all the suggestions!
