joe90bass Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Does anyone have a definitive list of what is offered by the Hwb? We're looking at server replacements here, but I need to check out what is offered by the Hwb so we can see what can be offloaded there - i.e. user storage, shared areas (perhaps via SharePoint?), etc
3s-gtech Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 (edited) Hwb and Hwb+ is supposed to provide the VLE, Email and Office 365. From the recommendations I have received (quietly), I would not offload anything to Hwb. While it looks good, it'll only survive as long as funding remains, and there are political factors at work there - to then find it's being ditched in the future while you depend on it could be a major headache. http://addysg.d-wdl.net/mod/resource/view.php?id=5557 User storage - Skydrive I believe. Would you depend on your net connection for doc storage? Edited July 16, 2013 by 3s-gtech
GrumbleDook Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 *declaration of interest* When are you both due to come online to Hwb?
joe90bass Posted July 17, 2013 Author Posted July 17, 2013 *declaration of interest* When are you both due to come online to Hwb? September for us. @3s-gtech Thanks for the link, that's more info than I've seen so far! And your point about net connection is very valid, it's my major concern. And my first attempt at posting this failed as our LA's proxy server wasn't responding! 2
PotNoodleTech Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Trenche 4 January 2014 for me. Personally I am not holding out too much hope. It could easily be yet another project delivered just to tick a box and then dropped like a stone. I guess I should be seeing the glass as half full, at the very least, office365 for all is definitely a good thing.
slugshead Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Anyone got any information on it who has it up and running? Was it what you expected?
PotNoodleTech Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Supposed to be having training on 9 and 10 June 2014 with a view to it being live in Sept 2014. All we've been shown so far are powerpoint screenshots.
slugshead Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Sounds good, I'm hoping to get onto one of these "drop in sessions" that I've heard a lot about lately.. Want to see what all the fuss is about
GREED Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Should get my neighbour @GrumbleDook to give some more info on the progress!
PotNoodleTech Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Soooooo........as it's been nearly 6 months... anyone using the hwb+ in anger yet?
pooley Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I had a look at it last week. I missed the training so only had the teacher and her notes she took. Now i'm not used to the office 365 and sharepoint environment and struggled. It was a bit like wading through glue, with an angry legless bear dragging behind. Management don't seem to be very pro-active in deciding what they want from it, staff are clueless and until someone tells me to i'm not going to make this my project. 1
GrumbleDook Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 You might find it easier to use the guides held here. Hwb - Hwb+ help and support 2
pooley Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Ooh thanks, I did hope that there was a forum or destructions that mere teachers wouldn't know about.
GrumbleDook Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 No Problem. The materials are pretty easy to follow, as are the how-to videos. The Digital Leaders are putting together more materials as well, including a cracking set of resources around LNF. Keep an eye out on the #hwbdysgu hashtag on twitter to find the Digital Leaders and you will find plenty of tweets about what is going on and who is doing what. If you ever have any general queries there is always [email protected] and for tech queries [email protected].
Nimon Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 So, has anyone addressed the elephant in the room that is giving every kid in wales access to One Drive? Or am I alone in seeing a potential problem with that?
PotNoodleTech Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 The only things I can think of are: 1. The 1TB storage limit is clearly theoretical as I am sure the server capacity does not exist at Microsoft to cope with each kid uploading 1TB of Blurays. 2. If Microsoft decide to charge for Office365, that would put Wales in an expensive situation. Did I win the prize or am I way off?
Nimon Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 1 TB of home accessible storage over which schools have no oversight without resetting someone's password and having a look?
pooley Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 We have had initial training here (primary), but staff don't seem to grasp what benefit aVLE can be to them. We already give pupils 4-6 access to email. Can't see this taking off massively in primaries.
GrumbleDook Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Sorry about not spotting this earlier. Best thing to do is to drop a line to the Hwb Team at the Welsh Government for queries on O365. [email protected]
