ChrisH Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I'm looking at the best way of calculating our KS2-4 levels of progress for targets, I have done a template in the past but it didn't get used and now it's time to create another one. Basically I was thinking a template doing the following. KS2 points + 12 > conversion to GCSE grade + 6 (or 12) > Marks to grade (GCSE). I thought it best to add the 2 levels at KS3 so the low ability would get onto the conversion scale. Using the following conversion: GCSE Grade A* A B C D E F G Notional level 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 I was just after examples of how other people do it, is there an easier way in SIMS? Are my figures completely off ?
number34 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 To be honest I find this easier to do manually. I have a column for the KS2 level and a column for the GCSE target. Then I filter the level, say 4, and use the assign a grade to column function to enter B. Then do it for the other levels. Much quicker than trying to use a formula. (I use exactly the same figures that you do.) 1
Mirmo Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 If you'd prefer to keep the calculation in your sims template, just use a nested if then else column. So have a column that works out the point difference between target and KS2, then in the nested column, if point difference equals 13 then progress is 3 levels etc etc. Edit: Oops, I assumed you were using sims. If not then you still know what solution I meant :-) 1
ChrisH Posted July 15, 2013 Author Posted July 15, 2013 Thanks, my title is a bit misleading but I was actually after the method people use to to enter a KS2 level and calculate a GCSE target based on 3 or 4 levels of progress. I think my stated method is going to work for us okay but if anyone has any better ideas I am open to them.
tmcd35 Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 (edited) Checking my marksheet it seems I do it this way... KS2 English test result + 13 = KS4 English target (3 levels progress) KS2 Maths test result + 13 = KS4 Maths target (3 levels progress) Average(KS4 English target, KS4 Maths target) = Average 3LP target (for all other subjects) EDIT: we use SIMS to convert the KS2 grades to point scores, do the maths, then convert back to GCSE grades.
