SIMS SQL 2012 Migration

 

I’m pleased to inform you that the SIMS SQL Migration 2012 Migration Utility is now available for download.

 

This utility contains the following features and functionality:

 

· Assists you in migrating SIMS, FMS and Discover Databases to SQL2012

· If required it can install SQL2012 Express SP1

· Allows for automatic redirection of the SIMS/FMS Clients and the DMS to the new SQL2012 Server

Customers looking to migrate SOLUS3 to SQL2012 should wait for the SOLUS3.6 release in August. Full details on how to migrate SOLUS3.6 to a SQL2012 system will be contained within its documentation.

I think I might go cavalier and throw my data at summer and move to SQL 12 and why not try SOLUS 3 at it as well. On the test server at least ;p

That document contains lots of details on how to use the utility, not the location of it.

 

Edit: does it actually do anything over and above dbattach?

Specifically, detached it from our old server (2008) and attached to new (2012) and can't get it to work for love nor money.

No,you can use the tools to point it to a SQL2012 instance on a different server.

Well unfortunately it is a bit more complicated than that. I believe that the old server has a rootkit on it, it seems to be somewhat contained but it keeps trying to generate files which the lovely Symantec antivirus just does an access deny on but can't clean. Cleaning the rootkit would be the obvious solution, but the tools that do that would need to reboot the server, however, the server has a corrupted drive and may not even be rebootable. I would be anxious about transferring files from the old server to the new server directly (at the moment I have it on a mini separate network) in case the rootkit spreads.

 

My plan was to copy files to external storage then use an intermediary computer to scan the files before transferring to the new server. I guess the question would be whether to update to 2012 on the old server first or transfer on 2008 to the new server and then update to 2012. Any insight on how to deal with this would be welcomed. We are also transferring to a new domain as the school has changed names and we are moving from CC4 to Vanilla.

 

My head is spinning a bit at the moment, I only started at the school this year and things were in a lot worse state when I arrived than they are now but my lack of experience with Sims makes me worry that I could have an oversight.

Take a backup of sims and only transfer that file off to a safe place. Set up a 2008 sims server , VM or on a spare box and migrate from there.

Also I think we need to upgrade to solus 3.. ugh this seems like a lot to do.

No internet required to just move to a new server. All you might need is to use a safe machine to download the installers so you can create a safe server somewhere else to restore the backup to.

You don't 'need' SOLUS 3 either.

At this stage i'd concentrate on getting a clean clone of your current SIMS setup, then worry about upgrade / migration.

To be honest we will probably just get Capita in to sort it out. I have lots of other things to do (inc. setting up system center and building a new website) that I can't really have the time to focus on Sims properly. Thanks all for your advice though, it was appreciated and will be taken on board when instructing Capita.

Turns out Capita aren't available until the end of September. Looks like I might have to do this myself after all. Just gotta go for it I guess, what's the worst than can happen?

Thanks for the info. I've ended up doing without Migration Tools. Is there anything I should adjust manually?

There's a guide they supplied for use prior to the release of the tools, so check that on SupportNet again, in case there is.

Moved entire server with new name, etc. Did all the standard manual modifications ini files, DOCSTORAGE, Tasks, etc. The only difference was that I've restored it to sql 2012 instance. All went fine, but just wondered if there is anything clever those tools do. I figured out I have to manually change compatibility level on db to 110 version. Was mainly curious what is happening behind the scene during "configuring sims database" step within migration

Well looking at resource 20081 on SupportNet it doesn't look like there is anything else to do.

You should check the other guides as well though. I think the main job is probably that it handles the redirection of connect.ini for schools that won't know or be able to manage the change, though i'm sure for the sql 2008 migration it sometimes didn't work.

One thing I had to was to reset a lot of passwords, despite running procedures to transfer logins on the old server first. Not sure if that would be any different with tools.
