Students handing in homework electronically

I was wondering how other schools deal with this. We have no VLE here so a lot of staff email work to students who in turn email it back. SOme staff have asked for another way t do this and want a sort of hand in folder for work to be added to so they can the go in and access/mark it. I have seen on youtube that a sharepoint work space can be set up for each Homeric assignment but this would be a massive strain on us supporting this.

 

ANy suggestions?

how about office 365? it's free. or a vle like moodle also free (but loads of work but cool)

Network shared folders with set permissions is one simple way to go. I have used this both as a teacher and a tech, and although its a pain, depending on the size of staff, its manageable.

Moodle, whilst free, isn't cool, and a right pain in the derrière to admin.

Try using Ranger Outpost which installs on the server and creates folders within each persons My Documents. It allows students to drop docs into this folder, for a particular teacher, prefixes the filename with the student username, and prevents them from seeing anything else.

 

The teacher just looks in his/her own My Documents, locates the Ranger Outpost folder and access the student docs.

 

It's cheap too!

IIS web folders could be option, access the files internally and externally with set NTFS permissions easy to set up also!

 

Another one that is simple set up with zero admin is dropbox get the staff to set it up, however data protection and all that then comes in....

All my schools and our local college use Google Apps for Education to do this. Having used both office 365 and Google I find Google much easier to manage and I really disliked sharepoint but both have their issues and strengths and both are free.

Our policy for electronic homework is Google Docs. It's better than 365 in that you have collaboration features that are only possible on 365 if you start spending mega amounts of money.
