Office 365 - Modifying mailbox properties

Currently scoping out an office 365 migration and I've just been told that when the source of authority is local (you maintain a local AD and the accounts are synced to the Office365) it’s not possible to alter mailbox properties on the Office 365 platform without workarounds. I.e. better to keep on exchange around?

 

This doesnt sound quite right to me, surely once you remove exchange from the equation all the mailbox properties are managable from 365?

What mailbox properties are you referring to?

Amending email address / creating additional alias for users, managing send as and full access permissions to mailboxes, delivery restrictions, delivery options, retention policies etc.

Most can be done in AD apart from managing send as, full access permissions to mailboxes and retention policies which need to be done via Powershell. These don't change very much so I don't see it as a big issue.

Thanks Andy this is what i understood to be the case as well.
