Help With Purchasing An External Hard Drive

Can any one fill me in on the best external hard drive around? I've done some research into Western Digital, Buffalo and Seagate as the main brands.

 

I was thinking of buying the Seagate FREEAGENT DESKTOP 500GB Hard Drive UK-VER 3,5" 7200RPM 8MB USB2.0 - ST305004FDC1E1-RK

If you don't want anything too fancy and capacity isn't so much an issue as easily carried, powered (without all the external PSUs) then it's worth taking a look at a 2.5" drive and caddy... grabbed a few from ebuyer and some usb store online... perfect for little jobs.

I've also got the 500GB firewire/usb one too. I'll be getting another 500GB one soon.

 

I cant fault them really. The only issue is that the firewire one will claim to be unplugged sometimes but i think that's more the computer's fault than owt else because replugging it fixes that

I have a new eye-t external caddy (no hard drive you purchase your own) which i bought last weekend for a use but decided not to use it. I am after my money back on it (£10) plus postage. Holds a standard desk top hard drive. has firewire and usb connections

i wouldn't go with the older maxtors i seem to have bad luck with them. Seagates are pretty good although they own maxtor now.

All the new Maxtors are Seagate drives.

Not had any problems with them, they're used for our backup to carry offsite, bit heavy carting 7 of them in a laptop bag but were the lightest available at the time, dunno about now.

I ended up buying the Seagate FREEAGENT DESKTOP 500GB Hard Drive UK-VER 3,5" 7200RPM 8MB USB2.0 - ST305004FDC1E1-RK and it has sorted me out nicely. looks good on the work top too.

I'm just in the process of lookign for a couple 2.5" ide enclosures and a 3.5" SATA enclosure for a couple of spare drives I have lying around at home

Best thing for a dead laptop, if the hard disk still works, get a 2.5 inch enclosure from ebuyer for about a tenner and bag cheap portable storage.

Personally, id get a Ethernet drive, you can get some of them for £80 - 120, and there 500Gb, Ethernet and can be easily shared. With most USB drives, and you share them on a home network, your computer will get slayed when someone accesses the hard drive, information has to pass through your computer. In the USB port, out the ethernet to the source.

 

Ethernet Harddrives will eliminate that, and i have recently jsut overcome the problems of a USB Drive, id play games like CSS and EVE-Online, and after 10mins, someone accesses the external USB hard drive, and my computer wont get past 20FPS.

 

Rule - Dont share it if you are playing games / get an ethernet external HD.
