One of our schools is looking at these for pupils, but also for staff. the staff use PC's for their smartboards, so they would only need them to work on/for observations. i like that you can print from them and access documents on the network, so that's another win over the iPads! my only small concern is staff accessing docs at home, currently they work on their laptops and sync to the DC when they come in. Would Surface RT's require dropbox? probably a large one (not the freebie)! anyone else thinking of this? i think staff will love them tbh!

I might be wrong (haven't looked into this in detail as yet) but wouldn't SkyDrive be the de facto solution here rather than Dropbox? Maybe as part of an Office 360 rollout? 1

I havent used an RT device - some of the reviews say they are sluggish. I dont want to buy something that no one uses. I need to find someone in a School environment to give an honest appraisal.

VeryPC_Ed Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I've had an RT for a few months now and the Dropbox app is crap, can't upload, can only view and even then i have had issues with opening files. Generally mine is used for browsing Reddit, working via RDP to my work machine on the sofa and maybe the SNES emulator. File access on the network is fine, from home I VPN in and am good to go if i need access from the tablet and not my workstation. Ed

But................Surface RT also supports any of the normal Microsoft VPNs (SSTP as part of RAS on Windows Server) and considering you can map network drives....it all falls into place (or at least that is how I have mine setup). 1

They disliked the lack of apps and found the windows 8 UI schizophrenic. Can't really argue with them on either point to be honest! They are very cheap at the moment but that's primarily due to the fact that they're about to be replaced with a new model later in the year. Maybe windows 8.1 will improve things but its hard to recommend a Windows RT tablet at any price right now IMO.

They are only cheap because they aren't selling that well. RT still has limited apps support. As for that supposed advantage with printing and network file access, that's easily resolved. Just use Printopia Pro, which works across VLANS and we even have it integrated with Papercut printing through the printers on the Wndows 2008R2 print server. For file access, MobilEcho is brilliant and you can also do WebDAV, Goggle Drive, SkyDrive, etc. with our setup we can print and access files on network over VPN from anywhere and I can also Remote Desktop or VNC to servers and clients with the "Desktop" iPad app.
