Do you have abortion related stuff blocked or unblocked in your school.

 

I presume we really have to allow the students for their work, any child protection issues?

 

I've just done a google images and seen some things i never want to see ever again.

I would not, unless it's a primary school. Things such as women's health (which abortion is a major part of), LGBT informative content and whatnot are infuriating when blocked. Especially for students researching things. Block google image results perhaps, only because of graphic content, but not strictly everything related to it. It may not be suitable, but who will be googling "abortion" on school computers unless they need to? (Actually scratch that, they are kids...)

 

I remember that in high school, researching abortion and LGBT rights for a debate in English class, most of what I needed was blocked. Anything with the word vagina in there was blocked, even health and anatomy-related articles. It's infuriating and does no good.

make no mistake i want to unblock it, i do not want to block something students need. I just want to be sure i'm not opening the school up to potential problems thats all.

I would say leave it unblocked. I don't see why anyone would complain when they get accurate results for something they googled. If it does become an issue, which I wouldn't have thought it ever would, restrict it to just articles or wikipedia entries perhaps.

We have just unblocked it as the whole topic its now taught a variety of areas. Philosophy and ethics, PHCSE

we have it blocked for years 0-9. Years 10+ need it for curriculum.

Unless you've been directed otherwise by the SMT then I would leave it alone. They get paid to deal with the hot button issues.

Worcestershire broadband have it blocked. Seems to be the correct decision.

A lot of it depends on the age group and demographic of the pupil population as to whether it is prudent to block it or not. It might be worth finding out what Key Stage deals with ethical and biological issues surrounding abortion and limit access to that key stage.
