TASC Pars and Insight are both very good.

Not sure what's going on with Capita SLG right now, I heard it was getting a revamp but until they dump the Sharepoint requirement its not really worth considering.

I think you are underestimating the power of SharePoint. We'll be moving to 203 next year which is stunningly good!

I don't think the problem is the "power of Sharepoint," more the fact that SLG relies on it making it extremely difficult and/or ugly to incorporate in to your existing VLE if it doesn't happen to be based on Sharepoint. Seems a strange move to so vastly limit your target customers by relying on a system not many schools use...

yeh +1

We actually use Sharepoint internally already but its just too complicated and slow for parents. Not to mention the licensing and upgrade issues we faced with it. TASC insight is much easier to use and we had far greater take up once we switched to it.

Hopefully Microsoft makes some improvements in 2013, that will be very interesting to see. Metro on the web anyone? lol

EDIT: I just tried to watch a demo video on Sharepoint 2013 on the Microsoft website, couldn't do it without installing silverlight. They really don't get it sometimes!! I gave up :(

I would choose PARS Connect and Insight from TASC Software any day over SLG, we have had both and we dumped SLG. Some of the prices Capita charge for it when it breaks are disgusting and treat you like a cash cow, its bloated, and just way to complex in comparison so many different parts to break. TASCs software is light weight, easy to install, easy to configure and their charges are reasonable they will also listen to what the customer wants and try and add a feature for you, sometimes done with in a few days. @LosOjos we'll probably be decoupling from SharePoint with adoption of 2013 i.e. making it possible to run outside SharePoint. Do the other products being promoted actually integrate with a VLE?

CHQ is a partner that offers various value added services.

I think most VLEs are amenable to having links into or out of other apps. The problem with SLG is that to have it and use it, you need Sharepoint. So if you already have a VLE in place, no matter the flavour, you need a massive overhead with sharepoint. Unless you go with a hosted solution of course, then the only overhead is cost.

Decoupling from Sharepoint sounds interesting, i'd love to know how it will work. Wouldn't it be easier just to buy TascSoftware ;)

@vikpaw I think our increasing user base would object!

Why would they object to you offering a leading product that many of the users already use and advocate over SLG?

Ooooh @PhilNeal now that will be an interesting line to follow up with Ben at the end of the month....

Have you had a look at Schools ICT's ZiLink modules that plug into Moodle.

Used this at my previous school and now looking to implement at my current school due to the integration with SIMS and ease of use, compared with SLG.

I have recently gone with Bromcoms Teacher's Web Folder, the SIMS Direct version, we already used their MyChildAtSchool for parents to access student information and TWF was a good extension of that for staff, and the Teachers seem to love doing their registers on their smartphones.
