SAN Down! SAN Down!!!

After a few days off last week i come in to be greeted with our SAN down and it will not come back up! stuck on initializing! Warranty expired in March this year. of the joy! needless to say i am not having a good day!

wow... I know the feeling we spent 32 Hours in our office once rebuilding ours from backups! it had eveything on it, profiles, data the whole whack! Rememeber to put back the permissions as well as the data!

I feel your pain. Come in one morning to a totally corrupt SAN, including VM servers. Whole network gone. Makes you thankful for a fully complete intact backup solution.

Our SAN also went down last week!, failover controller did not automatically switch over, I took out the failed controller and replaced it with the backup controller, this is the second time this has happened, it might be worth a try, failing that a factory reset might also help (although you may lose some settings).

Which brands/models are you guys using that have failed? We're weighing up SANs at the moment, reliability is obviously high on our criteria!

We had both power supplies fail in ours at once a few months ago. luckily happened when everyone had gone home.

Just over a year ago here our SAN went down (big bit of kit from a rather large storage provider) - 2 Storage Processors Panicked at the same time and the whole thing went down spent weeks getting VMs back up and shuffled between datacentres, even had said "rather large storage provider" in for a few weeks...

 

Then just as we got it sorted - Around September - the exact same thing happened in the other datacentre!

 

Must be the time of year for SAN failures..

I've got an HP2312i it's lost a psu and a hard disk but kept on ticking. btw the 4 hour warranty means they'll make a decision in 4 hours not they'll fix it in 4 hours!

 

I have backups but only 1 SAN I worry that 2 components will fail one day but I'll always keep the warranty active. I'll replace it before it expires or get management to absolve me of responsibility for it's failure.

Surprised how many posts there are with SANs failing - makes me think that I will stay with separate dell R710 servers running datacenter edition rather than spending 20k or whatever on a SAN.

If one server goes down I can restore the VMs to the others from veeam backups.

Also went to an interesting seminar last week suggesting you can use server 2012 built in tools to create your own virtual SAN.
