Sibelius 4 on thin clients

Is it possible to run Sibelius 4 on a Terminal Server from thin clients, without losing any functionality?

 

We are going to be installing a new music room and would like to know if Sibelius will work in this manner, as we are going with thin clients in other departments.

I tried to run Sibelius 4 from within terminal services and i could not get it to work, all the graphics would come up screwy.

We got the graphics working OK ... its our sound that doesn't work

What Thin clents are you using? & how are you porting out to the clients (Citrix, RDP, etc)

I would have thought that you would struggle doing some of the advanced stuff (if not everything) because of the heavy use of MIDI.

The Igel Winestra terminals are fairly good machines, but the sound is limited.

I have some of these machines, but can't remember ever getting the sound to work.

What sort of age are your machines? I think ours are about 5 - 6 years old now. Not even USB is supported.

No. Well yes probably but not really. Music apps are not designed for thin clients, infact music apps are not designed for networks, period. Thats why most music depts have relaxed policies allowing you to work locally then save up to the network when your finished.

 

If your still unsure try to RDP to a fat client with a music app installed, you'll soon realise how pointless trying the thinclients will be.

sibelius is a music notation software (like rosegarden), it's not a full on music production softeware - so I don't really see to much of an issue of it running on TC, depending upon how it was being used. (i didn't try it though)

@Cybernerd: Siblius DOES use full MIDI and does magical musical things... I guess one thing to try is a demo file... if that doesn't work noting will.

 

Most of my network is thin client but Music has fat clients because of what they do - half of them are Macs.

Yes same here. Infact music are mostly still using Acorns (if you can believe that) with midi cards. Only one PC in music.

Never tried any sort of music prog on the thin client system. Thin clients are restricted on sound & it may depend on your servers spec as well.

I would imagine if you did get it working (and I doubt that very much - how does MIDI redirecting work in TC?) you'll get huge latency, especially if using kontakt player. The latest version (Sibelius 5) also introduces virtual synths, that'll be a defintie no for TC then!

 

Music APPs IMO are best kept for fat clients

In the end we went for standard PCs in the room. We wouldn't be able to get the functionality, or the support from Sieblius if we used Terminal Services.

We are looking into a new network for the music department. Now im not sure about how it works at all any more (Citrix). Initally 8yrs ago at school I was under the impression that dumb terminals are used.. screen, keyboard and mouse then a beefed up server provides the GUI and processing etc or was that only UNIX mainframe gubbins?

 

Although im looking at solutions whereby windows workstations are running like a remote desktop into the server. So a normal workstation running XP does nothing and the server still provides the processing. I figure whats the point of that?

 

We need a space saving solution as there is about 60cm's either side of the keyboards to place the new workstations. Could anybody please advice me on how it works these days?
