KMS Activation - staff and students from home

As anyone set this up? Our EES agreement allows staff and students to install on their own home machines while employed or studying with us.

 

Obviously we do not want to open our kms server to the web so I thought they could connect with a vpn and then be able to activate?

 

What do other schools do? Im not giving our MAK key to students! Or staff.

I understand that you can either...

 

1. They bring in their PC or Laptop and you install Office for them using your MAK key.

 

or

 

2. Talk to your EES Reseller as they should have a process in place for them 'purchase' media with a valid key for nominal amount direct from them.

We don't have the student option so don't worry about students, staff however if they want Office, we tell them to buy under the Home Use program, they then deal direct with Microsoft and there's no management from our point of view. (other then point out the T&C's and providing the program code)

That's a great price how do you sign your school up, and what are the actual T&C's?

Currently we offer office via install on their laptop or PC - one machine per teacher, and they sign a form agreeing its temporary while employed by school etc etc.

It's done through the Microsoft Volume Licensing portal under benefits, look for Home Use Programme.

Why the £8.95? I thought if you signed up for the staff licenses they could have it for nothing? Certainly used to be the case anyway.

Much rather prefer to have the contract between MS and the Employee, esp as there is no guarantee of them uninstalling when the leave despite signing a piece of paper to say they will do. Doing this therefore puts any potential issue firmly between MS and former Employee, as opposed to school and MS. Or at least that's how i've read the T&C

The £8.95 is a handling fee, there always has been one under the Home Use Programme. What you are thinking of is work at home rights, which is free but you have to provide media and licence key, with HUP the user signs up through a Microsoft portal, gets their own licence key and can download the media or get it on DVD. The big difference is that they are then signing up to the licence as an individual, whereas work at home rights the licensing is still the responsibility of the institution.

On checking our agreement we too are staff only. The staff purchase sounds alot better/easier for everyone than KMS etc.

 

Quick question, what happens if a staff member who purchased office leaves/retires/etc ? Do we ask for anything like the key or media back or need to inform anyone?

 

We also have Windows 7/8 in our agreement, can they also purchase this? Would be a bargain to purchase a pc without OS and then buy win7 for £8.95 too!

Technically if a staff member leaves or retires then they should uninstall the software (they download the media or pay for the CD) but I suspect that will be tricky to enforce! We use the HUP and it has been very popular with staff and removes the headaches of dealing with KMS etc. the program doesn't include OS's - well not for us anyway.

No you can't use HUP for the OS, only office. Please remember that the OS is licenced as an upgrade so you would have to have either an OEM or full retail version to upgrade from, so no you wouldn't be able to buy a pc without OS.

As I understand it, the agreement is between the member of staff and Microsoft. The licence is not valid once the staff leave, but it's up to them to stop using it. You don't have to worry about it.
