Windows Firewall GPO

I am in the process of re-creating all our GPOs, so we have a clean start when we do our Windows 7 migration in summer - the existing structure is a mess of blocked inheritance and duplication.

 

As Windows 7/Server 2008+ have introduced new features, I am wondering about whether I need to specify things in both the old and new places.

 

An example is the Windows Firewall settings. There are the new settings under Computer -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, and there are the old settings under Computer -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> Network Connection -> Windows Firewall.

 

I've defined everything in the new way, do I still need to define things in the old way too?

I could be wrong, but no unless u will be using xp and older clients.

Sorry for dragging up and old thread, but @localzuk did you get an definitive answer to this. Just reviewing our GPOs and discovered we have some of the old settings lying around and wondered if we need them?

The Windows Firewall *without* Advanced Security GPOs won't be required if you don't have XP PCs.

Yeah, as others have said, basically anything "old" is pretty much XP specific. So, I've done without them and we've had no issues with our Windows 7 network.
