If any of you fancy moving to the private sector, SmoothWall are recruiting!

We are looking for a junior programmer to join the Guardian team - you'll need C/C++ and linux knowledge for this one, perl and understanding of networking an advantage.

Secondly, we're after a tester - some experience of software testing methodology would be useful, but not entirely necessary.

Ideally, candidates for either post would be educated to degree level, but we are happy to consider anyone.

Both jobs are based in our dev office in southampton (hamble).

If anyone would like to apply, or wants more info, visit our website, or give me a call and i'll send you all the info. Similarly, if you know someone who might be interested, i'll make it worth your while if we end up employing them :)

We haven't advertised pay scales; mainly because it's moveable - we'll pay the right person what they're worth. If anyone's interested and wants to suggest what they might be worth ;) I will run it past Daniel - he's doing the recruiting. He's not in today tho.

So you havent filled them in a month - knowing how many of us techie types there are down here, I am wondering why? Are you very very specific about what you want or?

I don't know why we haven't filled them. It is certainly not the salary, we're having trouble getting applicants with the right skills (maybe we're a bit picky?) - there's certainly not that many people with a linuxy aptitude applying. Perhaps we're recruiting in the wrong way? I dunno. We are using a number of agencies.

Even if you don't fancy it yourselves, if you know someone who does we'll certainly make the recommendation worth your while :)

Maybe it’s just me but if I saw it advertised by an agency I'd ignore it. Any time I’ve had anything to do with agencies I get the impression either the agency is not interested or the employer can't be bothered too do their own recruiting which usually means you never hear another thing....even if the job really existed in the first place. :D

And I could probably apply... :) but 700 miles to work is a bit far.

EeEk: Agencies suck, but we're trying any avenue right now. A colleague's other half just resigned, and within a day had 10 calls offering him his old job back from agencies....

localzuk: Might be a plan, actually. Any other forums you can think of where we might advertise?
