We are about to start. I know this has been discussed before but things might have changed. What do you do if there's a fire alarm. Currently, we take out the physical registers and do a role call.

I would ask your fire service for advice. In all cases that I've heard of they will completely ignore any list you provide and search the building in case the list is wrong.

Yeah we were told this as well, they will search the building anyway regards of any lists.

What the admin staff have for case of a fire alarm is have all the forms regesters printed out and someone takes them to the assembly point, the schools gets the students to line up in their form groups so they can be signed in.

Registering in a fire and the processes are only ever for peace of mind and it's not that much peace. just have a decent and enforced policy in place of sweeping the building as it is evacuated.

As for the registering, many do it by form class which seems ludicrous, they would be much safer staying with the teacher who is responsible for them at that time, and be escorted out by them.

They can do a head count and know if they are missing any, and report this straight away, without needing to do a register. What difference does it make if it's jimmy or jonny missing?

Your best bet is to try and follow current procedures as best you can, whether you're using lesson monitor or not, it won't affect that process much.

It would be great if they all used a tablet to do registers and did them bang on time and took them out with them and had a better list, but in practise this won't happen.

The only time we had something close was when we used Bromcom and staff took those 'tablets' out, but they still did a big country dance on the playground as they unmixed from classes to form groups and then they used out of date AM / PM registers to check against.!

This is for fire drill as much as the real thing, where I'm sure the Fire Service will do a thorough search anyway. I suppose it would still help them if we said we were couple of kids short?

@vikpaw - and when the fire was caused by the server going up in flames ....

Print out the register for each class and laminate it.

 

Take the register online and then at a specific time print out the list of missing pupils and maintain this list offline as pupils arrive late.

 

In the event of a fire the teachers take their laminates out and mark children that are present and then report to the fire officer to confirm any missing marks against the ecntral missing pupils list.

At the end of AM Registration the attendance office prints off a copy of every forms register and puts in a fire folder then if the fire alarm goes she grabs that and the receptionist grabs the late book and the visitors sign in book. Seems to work ok, in the past on some of our drills we simulate one kid getting left behind by one of slt grabbing a student to stay in the building to see if the process picks it up!

Then you rest easy knowing that your securely co-located capita hosting means you have a duplicate copy of SIMS at a different location

TBH it worked ok, it got picked up every time from memory. There is quite a strict fire policy for when there on the hard courts though, sit on the floor in alphabetical order in your form group and then the form teacher does the register by walking down the line so they physically see every student and then tick them off. Our record for getting all 560 kids out and registered is 5 mins or so i believe.

That's awesome @DSapseid - what age group are they? I like that policy. I can imagine the alphabetical part taking a while, plus them checking their passports to see if it's AlAbbas or AlAbass or ElAbass!

were an 11-16 school. Ah yes i bet it would be interesting out with you!

 

A lot of things here they have to sit alphabetically and the registers are called out alphabetically so they all know more or less who is either side of them in their form!! You do get the odd student which try's to stand next to his friend so they can chat! But on the most part there pretty good as they know how serious it could be!
