I am looking for a little guidance and other administrators experience please, I am looking at replacing 4 3-com 10\100 switches

with GB alternatives.

 

I am after 48 port managed switches, POE would be a bonus for future wireless considerations.

 

The switches are in 4 separate cabs across the school

For best value, I'd say the HP V1910-48 but be warned the interface is like dragging your knuckles along sandpaper. Same goes for most HP kit though If you're familiar with comware (3com) CLI then they're ideal. Not POE unfortunately, you seem to pay a lot more for those.

I bought a V1910-48 and its a great little switch for the price. Stay away from dell switches though.

The V1910 is from the procurve range rather than the H3C/3com range.

 

I'm also upgrading some of our 3com 10/100's but decided to go for a few 5120 EI's after looking at their stacking, QoS and L3 capabilities.

I completely disagree about the comware CLI (> version5). It's one of the best network operating systems around and a rival to Cisco IOS in my opinion. I'm sure comware was the reason for the 3com acquisition by HP. I understand that HP are trying to put some sort of interface layer on the procurves to make them more compatible with the H3C/3Coms, which is probably where its going wrong wrt the correlation with 5406's.

My understanding is that they are procurved based but HP added some sort of interface layer so that the 'speak' comware - so that their newer products are integrated with the 3com/H3C range and that they will drop the older procurve software like the 5406's. I've not had much dealing with procurve stuff as I've come from the H3C/3Com line so happy to be proven wrong.

Ah, I see. One thing I've learned with both the 5406 and 1910 is avoid the GUI's like the plague - both designed by someone with severe social problems! Always a good excuse to learn the CLI properly

Historically the WebUI on ProCurves was useless for anything. If you wanted to get anything done you needed to go to the console.

Get some 2920 HP's. they are awesome and brand new. I'm old school and configure CLI with putty.

 

The web interface is nice in these babies and gives you info like stats on POE etc...

 

These switches are PoE+ thus provide 30w per port. 10gb modules can be installed in the back.

 

Only buy these if your cabs are minimum depth 500mm.

They look funky with one caveat. You have to have a funky budget too... a grand a piece for edge switches is daft for schools IMO.

We're aiming for 9, again to support Ruckus access points. We got quoted more than £865 per switch, though - where is that price from?

Yeh same here when the do eventually sort me a budget out I know for a fat its not going to be any where near that,
