ICT Suite Benching

We are creating a new ICT suite/Study area for the 6th formers. It will be a blank canvas. Have had someone design a room layout but they dont design and install benching. What does everyone else do? Do you get someone in to design and install benching or do you go to the catalogues and just pick out standard computer desks?

I-desk look nice, I don't have the moolah for it though. I use standard 600mm Benching.

When we wanted to convert 2 existing IT suites to handle 15 more PC's in the middle of the room, we just purchased normal computer desks and then added a plywood "wall" to 3 joined desks to provide something for the electric/data trunking to go on (and prevent the monitors getting pushed onto the floor)

 

Where possible we will design and install it ourselves to reduce costs.

We have in house workman so we have custom 600mm desks build when needed.

Laminated 600mm kitchen worktops are good for this if its going around the outside of the classroom.

I've never found 600mm to be deep enough although will depends on your hardware we go for 750.

Good point. We mostly have the machines bolted to the back of monitors to save space.

I design and build it as needed, our Site Manager is a joiner so knows his stuff, I use 900mm deep breakfast bar which works great for us gives plenty of room for books in-front of the keyboards / monitors, also means plenty of room to space the machines out. 600mm is a bit too shallow in my experience, especially if you do A-Level and use A3 for design sheets etc... which seems ever more popular for thought showers etc...

In one of our suites, we had a 150mm strip of ply-board running along the wall and then 600mm worksurface butted up to that but a 100mm or so higher. This made a tray for the cables and provided extra room because the computers could be pushed further back. It looked quite neat but collected dust and grunge that the cleaners ignored.
