Just arrested a 50-60? year old white male with a device in his jacket

"Handcuffed on ground has a device on him"

?!

16.02 It looks like they have him surrounded. He's run over his brother in a police chase. He's angry about his brothers death. He's threatening to kill others because he's dead. He's in Watertown Massachusetts. They have called in for a Russian interpreter.

BBC Monitoring reports that a man named Anzor, who said he was Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's father, told Russia's Interfax news agency his children were framed.

"The special services framed my children because they are believing Muslims," he was quoted as saying. "Why did they kill Tamerlan? They should have taken him alive. The younger one is now on the run; he was studying in his second year at a medical institute in the US. We were expecting him home in the holidays. Now I don't know what will happen."

Let's be honest...He WOULD say that. Any parent would say that about their children, as I cannot believe anyone could see their child as a terrorist/monster/murderer etc.

Dzhokhar is still at large, but probably not in Watertown.

Alben says police are convinced that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has left the neighborhood of Watertown, Massachusetts.

"He abandoned a car that was used in the car chase," Alben said. But he did not flee in a vehicle.

"He did it on foot. He fled on foot. I don't know where he went specifically after that.

Also, it seems that some Americans are getting The Czech Republic confused with Chechnya. :(

The embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, DC, has released a statement underscoring the fact that it is not Chechnya. The statement reads in part: "The Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation."

As many I was deeply shocked by the tragedy that occurred in Boston earlier this month. It was a stark reminder of the fact that any of us could be a victim of senseless violence anywhere at any moment.

As more information on the origin of the alleged perpetrators is coming to light, I am concerned to note in the social media a most unfortunate misunderstanding in this respect. The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities - the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation.

As the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman noted in his message to President Obama, the Czech Republic is an active and reliable partner of the United States in the fight against terrorism. We are determined to stand side by side with our allies in this respect, there is no doubt about that.

I'm amazed the police radios aren't encrypted (assuming that's a regular scanner).

I was thinking the same thing. If members of the public can listen in on the police, so can criminals!

Caught him! alive as far as the news knows.

He was hiding in a boat...

www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2013/04/18/mit-police-officer-hit-gunfire-cambridge-police-dispatcher-says/4UeCClOVeLr8PHLvDa99zK/story.html

Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev of Cambridge was pulled from his hiding place in a boat parked behind a house on Franklin Street shortly before 8:45 p.m. in this community just outside Boston.

The dramatic finale came less than an hour after the news conference was over. A resident of Watertown came out of his house and noticed blood on his boat and that the tarp covering it was ripped. He lifted the tarp and saw a bloody form. He called police, who raced to the scene and exchanged gunfire with Tsarnaev, said Davis, the Boston commissioner.

Police surrounded the boat and there was a standoff for about an hour and a half. A State Police helicopter peeked at him from above, using a special infrared camera. Police deployed “flash bang” grenades to stun and distract him, Davis said. Police were cautious in their approach, concerned that Tsarnaev could be wearing a suicide bomb vest.

Dzohkhar Tsarnaev, who exchanged gunfire with police from the boat, was rushed to a local hospital, where he was in serious condition, Davis said.

Police had approached him cautiously, worried that he might be wearing a suicide bomb vest.

“We got him,” Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino tweeted immediately afterwards. He took to the police radio to thank officers personally, telling them, “Good job, guys!”

...after the "uncovering" and subsequent dismissal of numerous fake accounts, it appears the 19-year-old's legitimate Twitter presence has discovered.

Glossing over the whole of J_tsar's Twitter activity, you'd be hard-pressed to tell him apart from most other 19-year-olds. There are references aplenty to TV shows, junk food, and weed. Jahar reveals himself to be a fan of Breaking Bad and rap. But beyond the pop cultural postings, there's also insight pointing to his faith. Jahar's first direct mention of Islam came in December of last year. "Brothers at the mosque either think I'm a convert or that I'm from Algeria or Syria, just the other day a guy asked me how I came to Islam," he wrote. From there, the mentions of his religious affiliation ramp up, but are still far outweighed by other, less serious posts. Nowhere in his Twitter timeline does Jahar share views that resemble radicalism. In fact, he seeks to defend Islam on occasion from those who associate the religion with terrorism. (Source)

^ Why does Dzhokhar defend Islam and then go and do the complete opposite which simply reinforces the stereotype?

Indeed. His dad says they were set up. But that makes little sense, due to the running gun fights, throwing explosives at police, being identified by one of the bomb victims etc...

Maybe it's a case of the older brother being the person who planned it all, but the younger brother looked up to him and followed him?

Hopefully, the medical teams at Beth Israel will get him patched up and he can end up on trial and answer for his crimes.

Definitely! An experience I won't forget. Unexpected stop over in Dublin at 4 this morning too.

Nice to land an hear they got him.

There's an interesting article on The Verge today about unencrypted radios (like the ones used by the Boston Police).

Why are police scanners open to the public?

The more open the communication system, in other words, the smaller the chance of problems during an emergency.

Encryption only exacerbates potential communication problems, in other words. When many departments need to speak with one another at the same time, there needs to be an easy way to do it. Public police scanner frequencies provide that. And most police bureaus in the United States have chosen to keep these frequencies open rather than deal with the hassle of organizing every agency into one encrypted frequency.

“In the end, our position is that [eliminating access to police scanner frequencies] harms public access,” Leslie says. “There’s a lot of public good done by letting the media and the public know what first responders are up to and it’s a shame that that could all go away.”

This has always struck me as a bit odd, and in the UK it would probably breach the DPA! Having said that it is quite interesting to listen to some of these transmissions!

It's not that long ago that emergency service radios in the uk became encrypted.

The bombers next target was New York!

Mayor Bloomberg, NYC Police Commissioner: Boston bomber suspects planned attack in Times Square

New York City Mayor Bloomberg held a press conference with Police Commissioner Kelly on Thursday afternoon to report that the surviving suspected bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, has admitted that he and his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev "spontaneously" planned an attack in Times Square following the bombing of the Boston Marathon. Police Commissioner Kelly says that Dzhokhar has indicated to the FBI that the decision was made following a carjacking last Thursday night to drive to New York and detonate further explosives.

Police Commissioner Kelly said that the men had prepared six explosive devices which they had with them: one pressure cooker bomb and five pipe bombs. He further reports that surveillance cameras captured footage of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in Times Square "with friends" in April of 2012, and that they believe he visited New York City once again in November of 2012.

Sunil Tripathi, falsely linked on social media to Boston bombings, found dead

Sunil Tripathi, the Brown University student falsely identified by people posting on Reddit and Twitter as a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, is dead.

The 22-year-old's body was recovered from the waters around India Point Park in Rhode Island. In a post on Facebook, Tripathi's family confirmed Tripathi's death...

Shortly after the bombings, people posting on Twitter and Reddit inaccurately speculated about Tripathi's possible involvement.

Tripathi had been missing prior to last week's Boston terror attack. He was last seen March 15.
