Hi Guys and Girls,

Im looking at building a network for someone, it's going to be located in there basement and Ethernet to every (yes I mean every) room, IP cameras will also be going onto the switch.

He's been offered an HP Procurve 2610, These are very good switches but how power efficient are they and has anyone any idea which switches are the most efficient ?

I'm wondering whether switches use the full potential of its PSU 100% of the time or whether they scale up on usage ?

Anyone got any ideas / opinions ?

TIA.

It will not use 100% of it's PSU or anywhere near,

You want to go for a POE switch though for the IP cameras, using individual power adapters would be more wasteful.

The more basic the switch, the less power it should consume so a basic 24Port Unmanaged, L2 switch will use less power than the advanced managed CISCO L3.

Here are the power consumption figures for the 2610. Maxed out the 48-port version with PoE draws nearly 600w. Without, it's less that 100w.

How efficient that is compared to other switches I wouldn't know.
