Guest richard Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 We have a teacher who is leaving at the end of term, who is refusing to hand her laptop over. This was given to her under the laptops for teachers scheme. She is saying that it belongs to her and not to the school and therefore goes with her when she leaves. I have always been under the impression that the laptop came back to the school when the teacher left and was then redistributed. I have been trying to find info online but pretty much every site I go has been decommissioned.
mrforgetful Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 The laptops belong to school. We've never had any trouble getting them back off leaving teachers, infact it's often them who say 'I'm leaving can I give my laptop to the person who's doing what I did'

mrtechsystems Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Just to add to the point aswell we had a a letter for them to sign before they accepted the laptop which included Make and Model of the laptop and the Serial Number of the laptops which are recorded in the file. Something to bear in mind for the future
GrumbleDook Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Send her a final letter informing her that she must return the school property .... and send it by courier who will only allow for it to be signed by her upon presentation of ID. She will not know who it is from and so will accept it and open it. Give it a week and then inform the police of the theft. It stops others from doing it. As I keep saying ... don't put the fear of God into the staff and students ... put the fear of *you* (ok ... the last bit was a joke but the bit about theft and the police isn't!)
Heebeejeebee Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 We've had loads of staff leave this year and I'm a couple of laptops short 'cos they've not returned them despite letters and reminders. the site staff and bursar are worried about their keys as well since no-one (not one) has handed them in. If they're not returned by the end of the first week back we'll be sending them another reminder then a bill for a replacement. HBJB

GrumbleDook Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Actually ... that is another thing to let them know ... because it is no longer in school they are presumably using it at home and it will have to be declared to the Tax Man as a taxable perk ... So ... we have the bailiff banging on the door, behind them is the police and then when they get home they have a nice letter from the Tax Man ... Someone could be having a very bad day in the near future.

bossman Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 We just send a bill for the cost of the laptop plus VAT, this always seems to do the trick. I think teachers believe that no-one keeps records of them and so like in the past they have managed to pilfer all manner of items thinking it was a perk of the job.

I thought that teachers became teachers because they cared about the education of the kids, and that they want to help educate the kids. They will be obstructing this if they steal laptops. They will be obstructing children’s education because the new teacher might not have a laptop or one that isn’t good enough for the job. If the school buys the new teacher a new laptop that money could have been spent somewhere else.
