Home Folder permissions

Im hoping someone can help me out here.

 

we've bought some new imac's and a mac mini osx server. i've binded (bound?) the machine to AD and can log in fine. my issue is with the Home Directory redirect thing. Our home folder structure is \\server\share$\yeargroup\homearea\ i have to either put "everyone" or the year group in the share$ securites, otherwise the drive isn't redirected.

 

is this correct?

The Share permissions should be Domain Users/Read+Write. The folder permissions should be set using individual ACLs for each. It's fine to have the root shares opened up, but I wouldn't use Everyone permissions.

We experienced the same problem when introducing Macs. It's to do with the way that OS X navigates to shared folders.

 

Whereas Windows will blindly connect to the full path, OS X for some reason seems to traverse the path, so requires Special permissions for the Students group at the year group folder level of List folder / Read data - This folder only.. See screenshot attached

got this working now with that permission. something new i've noticed now. i've unchecked the "Force local home directory on startup disk" from the Directory Utility, to stop students from saving files locally. this works great ( i think ), but i've noticed an issue. OSX creates "Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music etc" folders in the home area, and only seems to be able to browse these folders. As this structure didn't exist prior to logging in to OSX, it seems files in the root of the home area or in any other folders cant be navigated to. when i click "All Files" i see 1 file in a folder called "Development"? but other files i know to be in the same location do not appear any ideas anyone? thanks jack

We live with this (haven't ever investigated any other way of doing it) and instruct students to click Go-> Home on the finder menu.

Ah yes. i see now......thats very annoying.

That's my general feeling toward Macs.
