Can't access my virtual server

I virtualised an old server (W2k3) onto a my existing new W2k8 server before Xmas as I thought it was getting physically iffy and it all worked fine.

 

But the school had a mains failure last night and since I just use VMPlayer to host the old server - I needed to come in and restart the VM.

 

The VM runs up fine - says its connected to the network but nothogn actually works network wise, only the left half of the net connection icon lights up - pings don't work either way :(

 

I'm a bit stuck :(

can you v2v to an esxi host using vmware converter.

 

If its free - I;m sure I could :)

 

All of a sudden - I got it working.

 

The last 2 things I did was to turn off all Firewalls on the w2k8 side and try and do a test print to a networked printer form the VM

 

the print job came out and everything was connecting fine again!!!!!!

 

COmputers - I hate em!

I would use ESXI which is free for the basic version - You can then auto start VM's from it too I think (but you might need vcenter).

 

ESXI runs on the bare metal so would replace the server 2008 machine

Dont use ESXi. Use Hyper-V, installed simply on top of the 2008 machine. It will do everything you need, its completely free and has advanced features such as snapshots

But ESXI is so much better.... but i don't want to start an argument

You really do need to start sorting these schools out though Si and get them into the 21st Century....

 

If by that you mean paying MS a load of dosh each year uncessariliy just so you big boys and girls can have the easy life and just sit in your plush chairs in your air-conditioned data centres laughing at your help-desk messages, inflicting Office 2020 on users who just want to type a one-page memo and print it .... then I don't think so :)

 

A Win98 VM wouldn't not talk to the network :) - It'll talk to anyone, password or no password :)

PS I used to use VMServer - I loved it, but then it went stupid web-based console and they stopped giving it away :(

 

They still give it away. It's now called Hyper-V and it's better than it ever was! 2012 is particularly good!

ESXi

1) installs in minutes on bare metal easily without the need for another layer to go through.

2) It wil do everything you need properly.

3) It's completly free ( you don't need a 2k8 Licence to run it ).

4) it has advanced features such as snapshots, memory balooning, virtual switching, kernel ports for ISCSI, etc....

what hyperv site you just need to enable the role in server 2008+ (possibly turn on some bios options) and its there and working

 

my issue with vmware is the same as bare metal hyper v if things go pear shaped i want a console on the server so i can fix it not having to remember various commands etc and remote consoles are fine until youhave a network issue

There are two answers to that - the Linux answer, and the Windows answer...

 

Linux - Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 | Virtualization | VDI Free download, same as ESXi. Doesn't require a Windows Server license at all.

 

Windows - Since you have to buy the Windows Server license anyway, even for ESXi, and Hyper-V is built in to Windows Server, why not use it?

Hyper-V doesn't have that greater guest os support. The modern OS are ok support wise but lots of people have legacy servers which they support. I have lots of clients who still run NT4 servers etc as the cost of upgrading some of these apps is far to much or the company has gone bust etc

@SimpleSi - you won't get support in Hyper-V for your Win 98 machines, ESXI will happily take it :)

I can live with it here as I'm just wanting autostart of the old w2k3 server VM after power failure as it still does the DNS/DHCP for the network and I can't be bothered re-entering all the WiFI AP and printer reservations into the host W2k8 one.

You know there is free tools from Microsoft to help with such things they do migration toolkits for most major features, DHCP is export and import so quite simple :)
