Teachers using IT and portable devices.

Hello everybody,

 

I'm a physics teacher and wish to improve my IT skills generally. I have used memrise, Jing and Camstasia this year but as yet haven't done much with mobile devices such as androids, ipads and iphones. If anybody knows of any good threads. Please point me in the right direction.

I'd look at it from the other angle - what problem do you want to solve and can these bits of technology help you to do it. Finding a project to fit the equipment is almost never the right way to do things.

The thing with iOS and Android is that each device is essentially a blank slate until you find and install the apps for a given situation.

 

It might be that you would find these devices to be useful if you first searched around for apps that will benefit you in your job.

Thanks Guys, The IOS physics apps looks nice and a good place to start. There is a lot of scope for physics apps. There are relatively few.

There are always more in development. My favourite couple of science apps at the moment are the PSE HD (interactive periodic table) and Exoplanet (detailed information on every extra-solar planet found to date, with a pretty 3d-view of the universe)

 

Also iTunesU offers free courase content from institutions throughout the world! There's a wealth of knowledge on it.

Have you got kids with their own devices or does your school/department provide them? Are you looking at whole class apps or quck little collaborative examples? What topics do you have coming up, which areas might benefit from a new approach? Not answers, but questions to help develop your ideas (and feed back here for future reference!).

 

I've always found that the science teams are one of the better departments to trailblaze on innovative uses of technology. As a science teacher you are in the enviable position of having a team available to help develop your resources. If you start to have success you might let them know what devices you have available in your classes and see if they can find further interesting apps/sites that migth be useful for demo's exploration or tuition.
