Video editing software suggestions?

We are looking out for so a PC based video editing package and wondered if anyone had any suggestions. Have only used MovieMake and Corel Video Studio so looking for possible alternatives. The teacher normally uses his own Mac and the software on it but we need one for use in school whichis PC based.

Don't forget Adobe Premier Elements - available as a volume license, and a perfectly capable video editing application.

Adobe Premier Pro here we moved to that from Premier Elements

Not too fussed about it being free (unusual for me!) and not bothered about a volume license as its only going on one PC. Will have a look at Adobe but that may come at too high a price I think even for a single PC. Been given £500 but that has to cover video camera, and extras as well as the software.

We are using the cyberlink stuff which was a lot cheaper than adobe and does everything we want it to to.

 

For the real basic stuff, windows movie maker is acceptable and we are using serif movie plus too.

If you get Premier Elements through an Adobe Educational reseller, It's as cheap as chips. Around £35 when I bought it but that was a while ago. You can download a trial version from the Adobe website but it's a big file.

 

If you are using the camera for anything where the audio is important then you really need an external mic. Trouble is, modern budget camcorders tend not to have a mic. socket. If I was in your position, I'd take a look on Ebay and see what's available second-hand. The Rode Videomic is a really good budget mic.

Actually, more recent camcorders seem to be going back to having external microphone inputs, although often small 2.5mm inputs. My Panasonic Lumix bridge camera has an external mic. input, and something similar might be suitible for what the original poster is trying to sort out here. The only problem with bridge cameras is that they tend to limit the video recording time to half an hour to get round some random licesning / import duties, so it might be worth the effort to see if you can get the US version with no video time limit. If you can , it might well be possible to get Adobe Premier Elements, 2 cameras, cases, spare batteries, SD cards and tripods for around £500.
