Bluestacks brings Android apps to the Surface Pro

Windows 8 users, especially those with a Surface Pro, can now enjoy up to 750,000 new apps for their devices, with Bluestacks launching a new beta version of its Android app player.

 

Advertised as "optimised for Surface Pro, the latest version of Bluestacks joins builds for previous versions of Windows and a version for Macs.

 

The Android App player is sort of like an emulator that lets you run any Android app on devices which are not powered by the Android OS. Bluestacks handles the code and the user interface for the apps.

That actually sounds quite cool, TBH.

 

It's still in beta, and supposedly laggy as hell, but it's a nice idea.

I tried it on the PC and its interesting, apps that need GPS fail to work even with FakeGPS running which works when you use a map app but some apps that are location based such as Foursquare still don't get it right.

presumably, on a surface pro you can just run an android virtual machine??

It would be better for the RT which doesn't have apps of its own.

Although it's a bit buggy at the moment, WindowsAndroid looks very promising because it runs Android natively on Windows.

 

WindowsAndroid is Android running with Windows kernel! It does not run by a simulator (such as VirtualBox), it's on real machine, so it's fast! It keeps full Android capabilities. You can run all Android apps, including 3D games!
