andyase Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 We have just bought several Toshiba C50 laptops. Configured Bios to use CSM in bios, we are connecting to WDS to install Win7 pro image. All previous Toshiba's work fine connecting etc. These C50's will not connect to WDS, PXE-E53 no boot filename received.... They will boot to PXE using UEFI................ Toshiba don't seem interested, they say hey only support networking from an installed OS...

themightymrp Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 As well as enabling CSM mode, have you also disabled the 'Secure Boot' option in the BIOS? This would normally be under the 'Security' tab....

They are trying to tell me C50 laptop is designed for Windows 8 and with that in mind, tough luck basically! what about other OS's? sorry designed for windows 8. C850 which we have some of, work fine and they are designed for "windows 8" as well according to the sticker. I said its a Bios problem as it boots to pxe in uefi, but not csm. They can't do anything as they don't have the facility/Skills..."this is tech support", I asked who deals with bios issues etc, they said Toshiba Japan... So he's going to send a couple of emails, but no response time or idea of one... Pity because the latest batches of Toshiba laptops "before these" are really good.

themightymrp Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 That's just plain weird then, the Toshiba website offers driver downloads for Windows 7 for that model! So it must be possible to install it What happens when you PXE boot from UEFI? I don't have a new enough laptop to hand to test it out myself. Could you try making a bootable USB drive to get to the deployment system? Kinda-like bypassing the native BIOS network boot system?

themightymrp Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Have you tried changing the BIOS away from UEFI mode AFTER the image has downloaded to the laptop? Maybe it works a little like the AHCI mode on/off for hard drives..

Michael Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 I had the pleasure of a Toshiba C50 yesterday... it doesn't boot off anything else other than the local disk drive. In my case it didn't have an optical drive, so I tried to boot off a USB optical drive with Secure Boot off and AHCI /CSM mode selected. I managed to successfully image it by removing the hard drive, imaging off a workstation and putting it back. I really think it's a pathetic attempt by the manufacturers to lock users to one OS - either that, it's Microsoft's attempt to make it more difficult. We wouldn't have this carp if Microsoft made a good job of Windows 8.

You may need to check some settings on the WDS server PXE-E53 error i seem to remember getting that with some asus x5550s until i set the bios to csm/secure boot off and so on (cant remember specifics and different school(s) so cant look but im 95% sure i had to kill uefi mode and go round the bios twice once to kill uefi iirc once to change other settings to allow pxe boot to woek
Michael Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 I've had the same problem booting off any USB device, even with Secure Boot disabled and AHCI /CSM enabled. The only way I managed was to remove the drive from the notebook and image from another machine.

You may need to check some settings on the WDS server PXE-E53 error The settings to be checked are on the dhcp server option 66 or 67, but you only set them if its not the same subnet. I did try it for curiosity and did get an ip address then it timed out on tftp. All our other laptops work fine on default settings.
Ianellis Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 We had the same issue - The problem was we couldn't PXE boot with these laptop over different VLANs. Plug the laptop into the same VLAN as your WDS server and try that.
themightymrp Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 I would try setting option 66 and 67 again as it seems to have got further with that in place. Then restart the WDS services and try to PXE again. I have 66 set to the IP of the WDS server and option 67 set to boot\x86\wdsnbp.com Not sure why its this file under the x86 but I can do deploys just fine with either 32 or 64bit machines 1

This fix is a re hash of several forum posts. Connect to WDS from a USB memory stick Did this on windows 7 Pro Install Windows AIK tools (downloadable). From the WDS MMC snap-in create a discovery image from boot.wim or the appropriate boot image. Format and make the USB drive partition active using diskpart. Windows 7 OS. Cmd - cd to the usb drive: diskpart select disk 1 select partition 1 format fs=ntfs override quick active assign • Copy the folder ‘boot’ from C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\x86\boot to the USB drive • Create a folder named ‘Sources’ on the USB drive • Copy the discovery file created earlier to the ‘Sources’ folder on the USB drive name - boot.wim • Copy ‘bootmgr’ from C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\x86 to the root of the USB drive • Install the Windows 7 boot loader: go to C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\x86\ • Run bootsect.exe /nt60 Set Bios to boot usb (or select boot device from menu) Install image, remove usb Set bios to boot hdd All done This should work on any pc booting to wds. Tom Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 I think there are different sub-models (as with all the Toshes!). I also have C50-A-15Q's which come with windows 8 x64. They were supposed to be C850's but they went EOL before the order got there and somebody decided that these would be an equivalent replacement
