Today, at Microsoft Ignite in Orlando, we announced Office 2019—the next perpetual update for Office. This release, scheduled for the second half of 2018, will include perpetual versions of the Office apps (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and servers (including Exchange, SharePoint, and Skype for Business). Previews of the new products will start shipping mid-year 2018.

Office 2019 will add new user and IT capabilities for customers who aren’t yet ready for the cloud. For example, new and improved inking features—like pressure sensitivity, tilt effects, and ink replay—will allow you to work more naturally. New formulas and charts will make data analysis for Excel more powerful. Visual animation features—like Morph and Zoom—will add polish to PowerPoint presentations. Server enhancements will include updates to IT manageability, usability, voice, and security.

Cloud-powered innovation is a major theme at Ignite this week. But we recognize that moving to the cloud is a journey with many considerations along the way. Office 2019 will be a valuable upgrade for customers who feel that they need to keep some or all of their apps and servers on-premises, and we look forward to sharing more details about the release in the coming months.

— Jared Spataro, General Manager for Office

At that point will we all have Office 365 Proplus deployed as the Office 365 signing in capabilities will be removed from the VL versions by 2020?

I am surprised to see Outlook on there, I thought they would have dumped it by now.

Were you thinking of this?

www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-commits-to-deliver-next-office-client-servers-by-second-half-2018

A support announcement from Microsoft from earlier this year had some customers confused about whether the company would continue to enable customers using the perpetual Office client to access Microsoft server products. Some took Microsoft's announcement that its preferred Office client was the subscription-based Office 365 Pro Plus to mean that the company wouldn't continue to support Office perpetual users after 2020.

Spataro reiterated that this is not the case.

As previously stated, as of 13 October 2020, Office 365 ProPlus will be the only fully featured, most up-to-date client that will connect to Office 365 services. (The key words here are "fully featured.")

Anyone using perpetual Office apps and clients won't get all the features at the time they are available to Office 365 ProPlus users, but they will continue to be able to use Exchange, SharePoint and Skype for Business services, Spataro said. Some features in Office, such as the PowerPoint Designer technologies, for instance, will only work with the subscription version of Office because they require back-end cloud connectivity, he noted.

Leave outlook alone. I hate it when I have to use the web version of Outlook.

The web version needs fixing. One of the reasons we dumped Office 365 is because of OWA. Its slow and clunky. OWA has some features that Outlook doesn't and vice versa, annoying!

Desktop Outlook is kept as a lot of business people live in it. Maybe Proplus is the way forward. Trying to upgrade the VL version is a bit of a pain. Has to be done out of hours.

i don't see why they haven't gone down the same path as Windows 10, Name it something like Office 365 (like suggested before) and just do updates to it instead of a new one every 3 years.

So hang on...

We get Office as part of our OVS VL and as part of that we get free Office 365 downloads for the students and staff.

Office 365 licensing is based on per user meaning doesn’t fit our lab it suite models...

So why are they saying “for those not ready”... We’re ready, simply give us Office 365 download on a per machine model at OVS VL Pricing!

What features is Outlook missing?

I love outlook and pretty much hate every web mail interface out there over it. They are okay if you are not doing a lot with calendars/email (aka pupils) but Outlook is still the king for a proper full PIM. Really I could survive without most of office but not outlook.

Well you can have a shared device Activation. So it checks each user but knows it's a shared device.

Yeah I saw that come about a short while ago however the licensing costs still don’t add up.

Example:

I license 135 FTF (Full Time Faculty) this year on OVS VL at £18.10 a license, £2,443.50 total.

License the FTF and get unlimited installs on school PC’s as part of this.

Also as part of this you also get licenses for Office 365 ProPlus for staff and students for free.

Pretty good for £2.5k...

Now onto Office 365 Pricing...

135x Office 365 ProPlus Faculty licenses £3,078.00 and that’s just for Staff... How the fook are we supposed to be able to license students on it when our whole cost is already spanked on staff?!?!

EDIT : To further add, we’re all screwed anyways once OVS is over soon and not only do we lose our discount we lose our ability to license staff and have unlimited installs...

This is Microsoft’s overall goal, push us all to web app or pay through the nose.

Yep! :)

Microsoft has been gradually improving its OneNote Windows 10 app in recent months, and the company is planning new features in the future. OneNote for Windows 10 will receive updates that include the ability to insert and search for tags, see live previews of Office files within OneNote, and Class Notebook features this summer.

Microsoft's OneNote for Windows 10 to become the default Windows version later this year

It turns out Microsoft is not dropping support for OneNote 2016 in 2020, after all, even though Microsoft's original blog post said it would be supported for only two more years. This Frequently Asked Questions page notes that Microsoft will continue to offer security fixes for free for OneNote 2016 under Extended Support until 14 October 2025. Office 2019 and Office 365 users will be able to continue to use OneNote 2016 alongside the UWP Windows 10 OneNote version.

Office2019 will defiantly be click to run only, no more MSI deployments. /sadface

Office 2019

Last year at Ignite, we announced Office 2019 – the next perpetual version of Office that includes apps (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Skype for Business) and servers (including Exchange, SharePoint, and Skype for Business). Today we’re pleased to share the following updates:

Office 2019 will ship in H2 of 2018. Previews of the new apps and servers will start shipping in the second quarter of 2018.

Office 2019 apps will be supported on:

Any supported Windows 10 SAC release

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2018

The next LTSC release of Windows Server

The Office 2019 client apps will be released with Click-to-Run installation technology only. We will not provide MSI as a deployment methodology for Office 2019 clients. We will continue to provide MSI for Office Server products.

Modern software not only provides new features to help people do their best work, but also new, more efficient manageability solutions and more comprehensive approaches to security. Software that is more than a decade old, and hasn’t benefited from this innovation, is difficult to secure and inherently less productive. As the pace of change accelerates, it has become imperative to move our software to a more modern cadence. In the past, perpetual versions of Office were released under the Microsoft Fixed Lifecycle Policy, with a term of 5 years of standard support and 5 years of extended support. Office 2019 will ship under a separate term with a reduced extended support period:

Microsoft will provide 5 years of mainstream support and approximately 2 years of extended support for Office 2019 apps and servers. This is an exception to our Fixed Lifecycle Policy to align with the support period for Office 2016. Extended support will end 10/14/2025.

There is no change to the support term for existing versions of Office.
