[sims] Nova-T4 - needed?

Number 1 - I haven't been on EduGeek for AGES! So, apologies.

 

Number 2 - Can anyone tell me anything that is still in Nova-T4 that CANNOT be done in SIMS .Net itself? The reason I ask is that Nova-T4 is a 16-bit application that Windows 7 (64bit) isn't keen on and most of our new machines coming in run that operating system.

 

So, do we still need to access T4 or is all the information now available in SIMS .Net?

I've been told the Capita line is that it's no longer supported or updated - that would suggest to me that all features are now in SIMS.net. Doesn't mean they're even half as easy to access, but should be there. I'm currently moving our admin staff to Windows 7 64bit, as they were our biggest NOVA-T4 users I'm anticipating problems but none have occured yet.

Nova T4 is actually in the process of being phased out right now, so theoretically it won't exist in a few months time. Most of the reports that could be run in Nova T4 are now available in the "Reports" menu under "Student List", "Student Analysis Reports" and "Timetables", however there are still some things that need to be brought over, most notably (according to our teachers at least!) is the grid view that used to be available (teachers as columns, periods as rows, table populated with classes)

NOVA-T4 'should' be EOL in the Spring release next year, but I've heard that story before. The only other thing you have to consider is that system manager is still a 16-bit application.... I suppose it will take windows 8 to come along before that's updated!

Although there is a bug in Sims.Net in printing classlists that can currently only be done by using Nova-T4. Captia brought out a patch but it didn't work for us.

 

You can notice if you are affected by going into reports/students list class lists.

 

If you select say 9a/eng1 then open the list sims.net shows you 9b/eng1

Windows 7 64bit isn't supported. Basically 64bit is support for a SIMS server, but not a workstation.

 

SysMan 7 is being developed after SOLUS3 phase 2, which is currently being field trialed.

Its EOL seems to be on a stick 6 months away that never gets closer.

NovaT4 is still supported by Capita for reporting purposes.

 

Some of the NT4 Reports into SIMS failed the testing phase and so do not yet appear in SIMS Reporting. The obvious one is the Year Timetable. This report could not cope with the complexity of my Timetable with it's Bands and Sub-bands. Hence the advice from the testing meeting was that it was not released at all!

 

Other Reports are still not functioning correctly yet.

 

It remains to be seen if support for NT4 can be removed from Spring Release - as per the Roadmap. If I am not satisfied with all the reports when the Spring Release is tested then I, for one, will be pushing for an extension to NT4 Support!

There's been a discussion on this though - getting System Manager to run on Windows 7 x64 is easy, getting NOVA-T4 to run is not!

System Manager is 32bit (like FMS), so of course it's easy. Nova-T4 is 16bit, so it isn't going to happen. Period. Windows 7 X64 ISN'T SUPPORTED, when it is Nova-T4 will be 6 feet under, x64 (client) will be supported (I guessing).

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to take a Nova T6 file, export it for Nova T4 and open it in a completely fresh installation of T4 without any other files or information for T4 and no Sims.net?

 

I suspect not but thought it worth asking in case anyone's got a way of managing it.

 

When I try and import the xpl creted by T6, firstly the subject cycle doesn't match, when this is corrected, because there's no teacher, subject or room data in then it won't import. I have no original T4 data and no Sims.net, basically just the T6 spl file and the export file created from that.

 

I can export the list of teachers etc. from T6 in tsv format but then can't see a way of importing it into T4 automatically. If anyone has a way of working it out quickly any help would be much appreciated or if anyone can confirm that it is just not possible without manually typing the values for each in. If you were to add the teachers, subjects and rooms manually to the plans and matched the cycle, would that be all it needed or would there be something else after that it needed to match?

Because all the NT4 Reporting is not yet available in SIMS.net, Capita will still support Reporting from NT4, though nothing else is supported.

 

I maintain NT4 in exactly the same way that I have always done ever since NT6 first appeared. As long as you maintain the Staff, Room and Subject databases in NT4 then you can export directly from NT6 to NT4 in the usual mannner, via the Transfer directory!

And long may it continue - until all of NT4 Reporting is present in SIMS!

 

This will obviously not help with a fresh install but have you not got a historical dataset that you can use that contains most of the info, which you can then update?

Apologies - I just read the bit that says you do not have any previous NT4 data!
