dhicks Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Did anyone else get a copy of Independent Schools ICT magazine in the post today? I did, and was suitably impressed. I looked at the cover and thought it would be the standard tedious "Computing"-style re-hash of press releases and dull industry pieces, but it actually does a pretty good job of summarising some of the tasks and issues that the average ICT Technician / Network Manager / whatever deals with. Articles included stuff on wireless systems, storage, and some handy hints for this term (I thought "write home to parents with suggestions and explanations on IT equipment in the lead-up to Christmas" was a good suggestion). Anyone else seen it? -- David Hicks
yabbadabba Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Didnt get a copy, Would be interested in details of how to get a copy if its on the magazine any where
strawberry Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 didn't see it, would like to though. Swap it for a becta/tes technology guide maybe?
elsiegee40 Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Likewise, I haven't seen it. I've got a data Protection meeting this morning and will see if it's buried on somebody else's desk!
dhicks Posted October 14, 2008 Author Posted October 14, 2008 Tell us more !! Hmm. Can't find any website, and I've lent the magazine at the moment so I can't check in there right now. Am starting to get the sneaking suspicion that I dreamt it. -- David Hicks
powdarrmonkey Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 No, you didn't. A copy turned up for the boss at lunchtime, I've put my dibs on it so I'll check tomorrow for you.
Jiser Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I ve started to put I.T. stuff in the newsletter where I work as I am also responsible for doing the newsletter. Openoffice for parents who can't afford office, good educational websites, useful I.T. commands, equipment, common faults etc and how to fix. Anybody else done this sort of thing? What feedback u get. Anyway sounds like a good mag!
elsiegee40 Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I am also responsible for doing the newsletter. snap! Including IT tips seems a good idea
enjay Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 So rather than just boasting that you have a copy, could someone post a link to the company so that the rest of us can contact them?
Popular Post powdarrmonkey Posted October 15, 2008 Popular Post Posted October 15, 2008 (edited) The web address is independentict.com and the editor's email address is bill@. I can't find any info about who publishes it though, it's a mystery. Edit: There is a link to register for a copy at http://www.independentict.com/magazine.htm Edited October 15, 2008 by powdarrmonkey 8
elsiegee40 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 From this page, it seems Bill is at Kent College Pembury... I'll investigate further; that's near me... in fact I applied for a job there about 5 years ago! http://www.independentict.com/about.htm
enjay Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Thanks Powdermonkey - two of the articles listed are ideal for current projects here, shame it is an October magazine not a September one :-(

elsiegee40 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 If it's the guy I remember, he came from a comprehensive down Dover/Folkestone way somewhere.
christhack Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 I got this too and was pretty impressed. I liked the idea of putting Tips on the bottom of each page. If you want to register for the magazine it seems like you can just email [email protected] with your name, postion, email address, school name and address.
elsiegee40 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Ooh! The HT has just given me a copy. It seems it was mailed to HTs... She wasn't dreadfully impressed: called it one big ad for Kent College, Tonbridge & Sevenoaks... I'll read it before I give my opinion!
enjay Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 She ... called it one big ad for Kent College Maybe it is (although any case study can be useful), but since it is produced by Kent College and sent out free of charge, is it unreasonable that use it for sef-promotion?

I agree... I think the HT is jealoius because KC prep is a rival to us (and A LOT bigger!)
dave.81 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Got mine this morning, sat and read cover to cover. Was very impressed by the content yes can seem like a bit of a ad for the colleges but when the info in the articles is relevant i don't mind.
BillBurles Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Hi everyone, A colleague has pointed out this thread to me so thank you David and others for the positive feedback! Independent ICT is my magazine that I have sent free to all ICT managers in Independent schools in England. If you have not got a copy or are not an independent school I have now uploaded it to my website so feel free to have a look - http://www.independentict.com/magazine.htm. Yes it is a bit Kent College biased for the first issue as that is my day job but hopefully as I get more articles from other schools this will change. I have been overwhelmed by the positive feedback and although there are forums like this one, sometimes its nice to kick back with a coffee and find out what others are up to in a magazine. I am not sure how much of it applies to state schools as despite what someone has said on this forum I have not worked in one ( there are many Kent Colleges! ) so cannot comment but you are all more than welcome to look if you have not received one. Hopefully you may find something of interest in it - please remember its free and my first effort! Regards, Bill
dhicks Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 Hopefully you may find something of interest in it - please remember its free and my first effort! A a damn good effort it is, too. When is the next issue out and what do you have planned for it? -- David Hicks
BillBurles Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Thanks David The next issue should be out end of Jan for the spring term and will hopefully have articles on ITIL, Sharepoint, Assessments, MIS and a few others - just need to think of some more tips! Regards, Bill
