The kids have macbooks \ chromebooks \ toasters etc. so 2d design isn't suitable Is there anything (hopefully free) either cloud based or osx based that can do a similar job and produce dxf files ? Important note: The HTML5 element uses websockets which do not work through Web Application Proxy, so you need port 443 from the gateway direct to the web (no other ports needed) 1

3s-gtech Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 Note that you may not be licensed to run some software through RDS -that was always the case for Adobe CS and may be the same with CC. 2D Design's licensing is pretty friendly but it may state that it's only to be used within the school site/PCs. 1

As stated in the first post, it’s not that they don’t want to, but it doesn’t work on different platforms. I guess this is going to happen a lot more with other software for use at home in other subjects[emoji1303]

I don't know what kind of size development team Techsoft has, but I'm guessing it's going to be on the smaller size and their knowledge and experience is going to be in building 2D Design for Windows. Building a from-scratch rewrite of 2D Design would pretty much be starting a whole new product. One possible solution would be for them to offer a hosted / streamed solution - run cloud-based instances of 2D design and make those available somehow in a web browser. Ideally, if 2D Design could run under Wine with little/no modification then you could use hosted Linux instances to run the application and Guacamole to provide the web-based access, possibly with OAuth integration so pupils could log in with their existing school accounts. The above would need a pricing model change, probably an annual subscription to a maximum-number-of-simultanious-users model. Current cost (based on purchase price split over three years and 60 home use licenses) is around £5 per user per year, which is pretty low for a cloud service. Edited January 22, 2021 by dhicks
caffrey Posted January 22, 2021 Author Posted January 22, 2021 Shame really, as 2d design is one of those rare applications that just works no matter what you do and it's nice and simple I think they tried sketchup and its more 3d focused, this is for 2d stuff for the laser cutter \ vinyl cutter Looks like were getting somewhere with Inkscape and exporting DXF though, although they are having issues saving but could be a permissions issue - not had a heap of time to look at it
