As a user of Google Alerts this news does not make me happy. A quick search just now didn't turn up any other news to confirm this. However Google has killed off so many other products in the past I guess this can't just be discounted out of hand.
Time to start looking for another service to replace Alerts just in case...
Our staff loved this one. Personally I've never used the gesture much - too much in the habit of Win+D then Alt+Tab - but people were at first disbelieving and then endlessly amused. Says something about school staff that, perhaps.

One of the schools I am working at ordered one of these about six months ago. It was bought through an Apple reseller along with a number of Ipads (15). The cost of the device was not cheap! This says that a company CANNOT block the sale of software. And that once you've purchased it, they lose the right to control it. Steam even changed their rules on reselling games because of it [Only in the EU, IIRC.]
There's also another court decision, which I can't find, what says that EULAs aren't legally binding. So they can't even get you that way. But, that may be US only.
So it follows logically, that this and this would be illegal in the EU, along with a lot of DRM.

A forum post got me to thinking about a script to parse DHCP logs to notify someone when a particular MAC checks in with the server. You can run this script as a reoccurring task on the DHCP server and when it finds a match for the desired MAC it will send an email regarding the activity. This script will also keep a log of its own to prevent multiple email messages for the same log entry it finds. I've run this in a production environment with an internally hosted Exchange server and it work
