If I remember correctly didn't someone warn BA about the issue early on but they ignored it. It was only when they went public that it came to light.

BA made changes to their website after a security researcher complained they were leaking booking details to a huge number of third-party advertisers without consent. The day after BA changed the JavaScript tracking code, they were hacked.

Well-known security researcher Mustafa Al-Bassam said earlier on Saturday that British Airways had changed the third-party JavaScript code it loads on its website as a result of a privacy complaint he had made.
