    Action plan

Those of you who are living with very old kit - it is worth asking around to see if anyone nearby has anything you could use. I have kitted out a whole IT suite with reasonable machines donated by someone from Edugeek I have also got kit from other local schools. It is always worth a shot as schools approach their IT budgets very differently.
  2. On our current website we have a piece of swf code presenting a series of photos We would like to change these - but don't have the shockwave Flash editing tools (somebody did this as a favour for us originally) So can anyone recommend a free (easy to use) shockwave Flash editing tool thanks
  3. Hi no doubt a silly question again.... I am revamping a website and the head wants some fancy scrolling stuff. It seems that I need to create a flash video file (is this right?) but I cannot find a free program that will help me do it simply. I am definitely NOT a programmer. We have no website software (eg dreamweaver). Can someone advise me what I should do? And don't say, 'Pay someone else to do it' or 'Buy a website building program' because we have NO money and so I can do neither - because, trust me, I would if I could!
  4. I have finally sorted it out with a bit of help from you lot. The info I wanted had been saved under admin docs on the actual computer I was working on, but it was hidden and when I searched for it I forgot to check for hidden files. Copied it into the staff profile and now all is well!! I still don't understand why i can't add computers by just the name, it needs the IP address which is OK until that changes - which it might Oh well, all is good ATM!!! Thanks all
  5. Please can someone help me?? I can see what has happened - the list of computers I painstakingly added as admin yesterday is not in the .xml file. I don't know why - does anyone have any ideas?
  6. OK - I have had to log on as admin and populate the ITALC folder with the computers, because if I did it as a user, the settings had gone again by the next day (not in the profile, I assume) Now, I found the ITALC file under docs and settings/application data for the admin, and I have copied it into the staff profile under application data - making sure everyone has access to it. BUT I have forced a gp update etc and logged on as a staff member and the computer details are not there. Can anyone please tell me what I have missed?
  7. Sorry, I am obviously irritating you but as I said, I have found the profile (and I did it your way too and it took me to the same place) but there is no documents and settings folder even though I have set up the master and one client using a staff log on, and this is where I am confused. I can go back and log on as local admin if you think that is better and set up a few clients there, but I still dont see a 'documents and settings' folder to put it in, only application data
  8. In my notes it says that the staff profile is on the C drive on the server, which I have found..BUT there is no 'documents and settings' just straight to application data and no italc folder. I am very confused Please can you help me? I am stuck until I can get all the staff to be able to see all the italc clients when they log on to the master machine
  9. I *think* we have roaming profiles but I am not sure - on the server there is a profile for teachers and one for students (how do I tell?) and I don't know how to script it to do anything on log in - can someone help with words of one syllable...? if I just have to drop it in to their profile, what do I drop where??? Thanks
  10. Done that but it doesnt like it on its own, it still wants the IP address. The one I put in seems to have stayed though but I am worried! Another problem - does EVERYONE who logs on have to populate the master screen? I initially put the one computer on as manager, only to find it doesnt show when I log on as a staff member. So I added it as the staff member, only to find that it doesnt show when I log on as a different staff member. Surely everyone doesnt have to do this? How do I get the master settings to be seen by anyone (well, staff anyway) who log on to the computer?
  11. Hmmm - may have spoken too soon It wouldnt let me specify the machine just by name, I had to put the IP address in too before it would work. BUT the ip address isnt fixed and could change tomorrow, rendering the system useless! Is is best to do MAC address (and if so, where do I get it) and will this work on its own? Or am I missing something....
  12. And it did!! I'll never know quite why but now it does so that's done then! thanks for all your help
  13. I have chosen one computer in the IT suite to be 'master' and currently I have only installed the client on the computer next to it. No firewalls Since I reinstalled it, when I try to access the client machine from the master, on the client I get an 'authentication error' - apparently this is to do with the key, and is a step forward as I never got that before. I am going to produce a new master key and export it to the client and see if that works
  14. Well, here I am back again with the same problem. Uninstalled everything and started again. I installed italc on the master first and exported the keys to a location on my server. Then I installed it on a client and imported the key, which seems to have gone fine. But.. the master computer still cant see the client, whether I add it by IP or name or anything else for that matter. No firewalls for definite Please can someone help?
  15. Firewall isn't on - know this for def as a while back we couldn't update the NOD32 and that was the reason - so all firewalls turned off. Had another look -windows firewall is off - is there another one anywhere I should be looking at? . I have put the master on a workstation in the IT suite but the machine next to it cannot ping it - should it be able to and if so, what do I look for to get this right??
  16. It's HERE!!!! Run AWAAAAAYYYYYYY Two cases confirmed in school today
  17. Right, have tried the current IP address of the computer next to the one with the master software on it, and its name/domain etc, but no luck. I have tried it logged on as a teacher and an admin C'mon people, give me a hand here, PLEASE
  18. I think it might be fine for techs in senior schools in a more proscribed environment but in a primary/junior/middle you have a huge range of responsibilities in some areas that maybe wouldn't be expected of an IT technician, but on the other hand, there is possibly less expertise in other areas. My results were all over the place
  19. *bump* I'm sure that this is a stupid question - please just humour me (NB: can't find computers by IP address as this changes)
  20. OK - now I have got it going..... Do I install the master on the server and if I do how does the controlling teacher access it? Or do I just install the master on the 'teachers' computer in the IT suite I am having trouble seeing the clients - doing it by name eg: XXX1.domain name. Is this right or is there another way? Ta
  21. Ohh - that seems to have done the trick!! Thanks all:D
  22. The service is listed. It says it has started but I restarted it anyway. No difference!
  23. Mine has gone too - only about 4 years old - seems a life cut short to me- which is why I have done my best to future proof this time
  24. OK, *sigh* - obviously done something silly again... Installed ITALC on the server and a client Can't run it on the server - I get a message telling me "There seems to be no ITALC service running on this computer or the authentication keys aren't set up correctly" What have/haven't I done? Server 2003 by the way. It installed fine as far as I could see. I let it install to the default locations Anyone help?
