Goodness, what a lot of very interesting people! Welcome all!

I'm trying to install Rapid Writing on the server on a mapped drive called 'CD Roms' The program tells me that there isnt enough space and I need about 800mb The mapped drive is one of 5 - mapped from data drive. The whole drive has 197GB free The stupid thing is, this is a reinstall and I havent installed anything else in the interim I'm sure the answer is simple, but it is Friday, I'm tired and I've just had my head bitten off by an irate DH Wasn't even my fault!

This would be our main problem, along with the software that doesnt work issue: we went up to Server 2008 in the summer and lost several bits that the teachers used a lot - despite someone VERY knowledgeable giving me a hand, we couldnt get some of the stuff working and I suspect that would be the same with W7. (no way could we afford a new server AND upgrading to windows 7) As chrrb said, it is hard enough in a primary to get money for new machines, never mind upgrades. I suspect that what will happen will be that new machines will be bought with W7 on, and slowly the whole system will be upgraded I would be very interested to see how it goes in a primary as well

Sorry, but I have just read through the entire thread and can see no one agreeing with you at all. Could you point me to the relevant posts? One person tells us to chill out, but apart from that every single post is in support of edugeek, explaining to you why the statistics do not reflect the real edugeek. You are right, you don't deserve the petty insults, but neither does edugeek deserve the constant sniping that you indulge in. I'm afraid that many people don't like it and if you do it you must expect that some people will get upset. As Witch said, if you stop now and start acting sensibly, all here will welcome you. Exactly! RingofFlame doesn't want discussion anyway, as you see none of the points we have raised have been answered, and even her erstwhile supporters are quiet. That's what most of us do - those who have joined, lurkers, those who post, and those who don't - we all serve to make edugeek what it is - a fantastic resource for people like us to get the answers they need to enable them to do their job effectively. Is edugeek as large as it thinks it is? YES:)

And that's how it should be! Silliness like that is very welcome, as was alan-d's (?) use of silliness earlier. Dos_Box stays out of things as much as he can - more than most, I would say, but he has the right to decide how he wants his site to be perceived in the workplace and whether you see it is dictatorial or not is irrelevant. What hasn't happened, and I think it would be good to keep this in mind - is that no members have been infracted or banned for all this -which given the nature of some of it is very generous, IMHO, and so the stick he wields is currently, a nice small one. As he say, he just wants people to use their common sense and remember where you are.

No, you misunderstand me - what I meant was that just because the relatively few people reading the thread liked it, doesn't mean that one can presume that everyone did and therefore that is the way to behave - as a company hoping to sell into this market. Whilst I do see that if you don't like something, you don't have to read it, where exactly does that end? Extreme porn and violence is OK because you don't have to look at it? (yes, I know, an extreme example but you get my point) I think that this is a cracking site and I would hate to see it go downhill - and IMHO the sort of thing that has been happening lately is not doing edugeek any favours

I don't know how you can possibly say that 'most' people enjoyed your thread. Obviously the people posting to it were, in the main, people who enjoyed it but you have NO idea how many people were avoiding it or even complaining by reporting it or pming to mods and admins. Remember how many people there are on Edugeek. There is a minority who enjoy pointless innuendo and complete nonsensical arguments, but I think you will find that there are many more who do not. I personally like the 'General Chat' forum but as has been said, this is not Facebook. Previously we seem to have been able to have a light conversation about cars, or whatever, with humour and banter thrown in, that has stayed on topic, had little sleaziness and not upset anyone with nasty pointed remarks or spiteful comments. I would very much like to get back to that. As someone who represents a company, Danielle, you might like to remember all the other edugeeks out there who have extensive buying power, but who don't appreciate this sort of thing

Hi - as always this is a very basic question so please be kind! The place I work in has a website which is not really liked - mostly due to things like headers, fancy stuff and the like. The content is fine. The hosting is by a company that has been slated and so we have some issues: Firstly, I would like a new website, either written by myself (hah!) or someone else, perhaps in Joomla? How likely is it that I could do this, given that I have the content of our current website to look at? Failing that - how would I go about finding someone VERY cheap to produce a website for us? How do I go about finding a host? And do I do this before the site has been produced or what? I had a look around and the hosting companies were asking for bandwidth and database size - how do I get this info and what else do I need? I suppose what I am looking for is an idiots quide to creating a website and putting it somewhere it can be seen! Grateful for any help - as always

Ahh...don't know how to do that - think it is an LA thing. Still, it works OK inside, EXCEPT that it wont see any of my switches - anyone any ideas as to why that would be?

Well that's weird - when I put "http://localhost:8080" in I got straight to the spiceworks 'details' page - presumably the one that wouldnt load before? I've put the proxy in and all that - I'll see if it works now. I think I still can't connect outside of my network so I can't see documentation or join the Spiceworks community. Any ideas?

I'm sure this is another silly question - *sigh* I am trying to install Spiceworks but when I try and launch it I get an error message saying: The requested URL could not be retrieved. Is it a port issue? I don't know whether I should change the default port, but I did it anyway - to port 8080 that we use (?) and this made no difference. Please could someone give me a hand with this?

That's the point of these things - they all have an 'obvious' answer which is in fact wrong. I must admit, the only one that just leapt, correct into my mind was the second one, I had to think about the others

ah, now that is where you have got me - I'm afraid I can't find the place on the website (because I don't know what it would be called) and the whole thing makes no sense to me at all. I have no experience of html and cannot edit it I'm afraid. Could you point me at what I want? Thanks

Now you lovely lot have blinded me with technicalities! What we have is a set of pictures that fade into each other, and that is all we really want. I just need to change the pictures (or just create a whole new set). I will have a look at DHTML etc but I'm afraid that it sounds a bit beyond me, I'm afraid. I don't have any experience other than changing the odd bit on a website.
