  1. Just get the cheapest version that will meet what's written on the EHCP. Chances are the student won't use it anyway (from my experience).
  2. What usually happens is that specific piece of software can be written into a child's EHCP. This occurs when a parent, educational psychologist, senco, local authority lead, etc recommends it. Once it is in the EHCP the local authority (and therefore the school) has a legal obligation to provide what is in the EHCP; The EHCP is a legally binding document, so you can't really argue for alternatives. This is usually ok for the school, because the EHCP comes with the funding to pay for the software/hardware. It's just a pain to setup
  3. Can you try installing pyside2 manually.

    Windows 11

Because it can be done, doesn't mean it will be done. Porting architectures (and operating systems) ultimately costs developers money - even if it's click of a button easy they will still need automated testing setup for various platforms, usually it's going to take more than that (changing languages for example!). With many (educational)app developers, doing anything new is often a challenge. The danger Microsoft face with ARM, is it threatens their longstanding backwards compatibility and plethora of software model.

yes - also known as backwards compatibility. Nobody in their right mind installs an operating system for the sake of it being an operating system, it's only as good as the applications it runs. Webapps would be ideal, but *all* the manufacturers have a vested interest in discouraging this whilst paying lip service. If everything was going to go the way of html it would have happened by now. Apple can get manufacturers to transition their code to ARM as they can stop supporting x86_64, I'm not sure software manufacturers will be too impressed if microsoft try and increase their costs by demanding they hire porting teams to release in x86 *and* ARM together - developers are reluctant to release the same software in Linux/Macos which is comparatively simple compared to changing the entire architecture. That leaves a compatibility layer, which will be a performance drop.

I think this area is more difficult for Microsoft. The one (only?) reason we buy Windows, and it's number one selling point is because it is has fantastic backwards compatibility. Linux, macos or any other system doesn't come close to the way windows will allow legacy apps. And education always has a *lot* of legacy apps. I think the only way MS will be able to compete here is if they have a 100% compatibility layer for the legacy software.
  10. Had mine for a month before I realised it has a builtin popup webcam, which saves me rigging up my phone for meetings. The docking station feature is excellent, it's great to be able to plug my macbook in and carry on using a mechanical keyboard and proper mouse!
  11. Nope! One of my tasks will be to write something up for the helpdesk
  12. One of my back burner projects that I had in mind (which I won't get to do as I'm leaving my current role!) was to do a cloud/on premise split. Hyper-converged is the fancy term for business managers. The idea would be to have several (3?) machines on premise with Ceph installed, and then another (3?) in Azure with the same. The azure load, but ideally the on premise too, would be in kubernetes so that it could scale out automatically and self heal if there was a problem. Ceph would then manage the transition of files between the sites. I'd then mount the Ceph system from containers and serve out my CIFS/NFS shares as normal. I was reading an article by a microsoft solutions engineer about putting (the cloud side) together: https://dev.to/cdennig/using-rook-ceph-with-pvcs-on-azure-kubernetes-service-djc

  14. I did the AZ103 and use Azure daily - but to be perfectly honest if you are just starting out then give some serious consideration to AKS and GCP - there are so many things that I need in Azure that I just can't do ( with many in perpetual beta ) . So before buying a product, consider what your requirements are and then choose the product that most meets them. Where I am at the moment we did it all backwards and are really paying the price now.

  16. Prometheus/Grafana stack is considered pretty much de facto standard in SRE circles these days https://prometheus.io/ https://grafana.com/ It's not for the faint hearted, it's quite a high end system.
  17. Ages ago, my colleague built one using google forms - it would send emails to the owner to head of department would would click an 'approve' button. There are some templates for this sort of thing knocking around on the internet.
  18. I don't understand why you think you would need to pay Microsoft to run linux on VMWare platform? I'm assuming your not doing any weird nested virtualisation. The linux servers have nothing to do with the MS licensing model.
  19. Seems odd to hear a good result for an intel chip these days so I did some comparison. @£583 these are nearly TWICE the price but the benchmark is EIGHT times faster with a four year warranty. https://www.theedustore.co.uk/mac/mac-mini/mac-mini-apple-m1-chip-with-8-core-cpu-and-8-core-gpu-256gb-ssd-4-year-warranty https://www.notebookcheck.net/These-Apple-M1-Cinebench-R23-scores-are-quite-impressive-for-a-10-W-processor.504380.0.html
