[sims] Capita is trying to sell off non-core businesses (SIMS is for sale)
aicrd replied to psydii's topic in MIS Systems
Summer 2021 is tomorrow I believe. Edit: Scratch that. Its: "The SIMS Summer Release is expected to be released to Independent and International Schools on 9th July. Hosted SIMS schools will be upgraded a week later between 16th - 18th July. " Link -
I am hopeful they have easy ways remove them. GPO settings and whatnot. Oh what am i saying of course they wont.....

If you need an extension beyond Windows 10 SAC, you could always deploy LTSC 2019, which doesnt reach EOL until 2029. Granted, it's not exactly possible to know if future applications and software updates would support this release, even if it does still get security updates. But its always an option.

Interesting. On this site: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-11 It says 2.0 is the requirement.
-
The minimum requirement is for TPM 2.0, not just 1.2. I've seen a few people manage to modify the leaked ISO to get it to install on non-TPM devices. This might be something others will have to look into as well.

Any way to mark external emails with a warning in Gmail?
aicrd replied to fiza's topic in Cloud Services
We have this and it's one via Exchange mail flow rules. When it detects a sender outside the domain, it appends the words [EXTERNAL] to the front of the mail subject. You can also have it append a message at the start of the email, or really do a number of things depending on the rule. I'm not too familiar with G Suite, but it may be worth looking to see if it has similar options? -

Me please! -
Worth noting that you shouldn't really be installing any leaked builds on physical hardware, we don't know the legitimacy of any of the builds or if they contain any sort of nasty malware so I'd stear clear of it for now.

I'm sure it said Microsoft would continue the current semi-annual release cycle up until 2025? So 21H2, 22H1, 22H2, 23H1, etc.
-
Yep. It does appear to be 64 bit only. No 32 bit option at all in the builds i've tested
-
Having tested and used the leaked build, I have mixed opinions. I joined it to my test domain and as expected, everything worked apart from start menu GPOs. I actually like the new style start menu however the fact that the taskbar is now 100% static is a bit disappointing. Thankfully, you can change the alignment of the start menu so it is centered to the left, as Windows 10 is. Control Panel still exists. Microsoft still have not finished removing it (At least not in this build, from May 2021). Internet Explorer is no longer an option and Edge is the only browser. So basically, dont expect this to be an upgrade from W10. It's gonna be a W7-10 all over again, new GPOs, management, etc. I fully expect this to be renamed to just "Windows" instead of the "Windows 11" indicated in the build. Or I hope so. 11 just sounds a bit naff....

Should say you dont need to buy that to run Stadia. It will run on any chromium compatable browser, and on Safari on iOS. Stadia is free, you pay for the games, and they have a pro sub which includes 4k streaming and a free game each month. In terms of my experience, it varied. I ended up going to GeForce Now, mainly because of the larger game library. I will say this however. Stadia is the most stable cloud gaming service I've used, latency is barely noticable, connection dropouts are rare and its overall a great experience. Unfortunately, it still falls short of everything else in terms of game support for example and it seems to me that its being neglected a lot by Google. Should also say I've used GFN, Stadia, PS Now and XCloud.

Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)
aicrd replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
I (thankfully) haven't tested postitive yet, but been PCR tested a few times. Its always a bit unnerving when you get the text from the NHS, especially on my apple watch as it always cuts off the result! -
[sims] Script to export PDOs for all records held in database
aicrd replied to EduDataPro's topic in MIS Systems
Also you don't need to pay for a SIMS licence to retain your SIMS server. You just won't get any updates or support from Capita ESS. -
None taken at all But yes, ideally you'd want a local + cloud and if you cant do immutable then an offline backup method (Such as tape) will save you from ransomware.
-
That's why we do Backblaze - Immutable backups.
-
Usually we'd run it on a VM and then backup the entire VM daily, both on prem and in a Backblaze B2 container. Has saved a lot of hassle in the past as instead of reinstalling SIMS on a new server and restoring the backups we can just restore the whole machine.
-
Sorted. Just ended up attaching a copy of a demo db and its all working now.

Hi all.Trying to create a SIMS test server using the install files from our S drive on the main server. This machine isn't AD joined I'm running: Windows Server 2016 Standard SQL Server 2016 Standard SP1 .NET 3.5 & 4.7 installed. When trying to create a new database using the SIMS DBAttach utility, I get an error about a dznet.dll not being found, as shown here.Anyone got any ideas? I'm sure this worked last time I did it.

Have you looked at Hostifi? It's really intended for MSPs, but it's essentially the Unifi controller hosted in the cloud. They are US based as well I believe but I think you can choose which region your controller is hosted in. Might be worth a chat with them.

One thing to note is the web filtering isn't included in the free version. You need NG Firewall HomePro, which is $50 a year. It's also licenced per device, however on the home version you get unlimited devices. They do have a 14 day free trial though for the pro features.
-
Yeah. I use Untangle Home and it has block categories and everything. Can even block VPNs if you want to go down that route. It's also not DNS based filtering like most ISP filters so it's not as simple as changing the DNS server on the device to bypass it.
-
Does the device you are testing from have your ISP DNS settings set? Most of the inbuilt router blocks I've seen do it based on the DNS.
-
Yes sorry. Had no idea the rules were different! Quite annoying. I only realised after I spotted something in our usage rights doc.
-
Yes, we already have an agreement in place. Since it's a month to month agreement, we haven't actually paid anything yet as we haven't started to use the licences. I'll be talking to our reseller before we do our first report to make sure I dont miss anything. I probably should have mentioned we had an SPLA agreement from the start however I didn't realise the licencing rules differed at all.
